One of my cousins who worked in Debenhams, Worcester when she came over to Belfast came in 2019 for a visit. Wanted to look around the Belfast one, so we did. She said the manager of her branch had left and no one wanted the job, and you could see staff from counters also going week by week. At that point the store was not down for closure. She decided to train as a nail technician and work from home. Not only that, but she at that time waiting to complete the health part of the course and then would put in her resignation and leave. She had worked at the same counter Dior for years and loved Debenhams but said the truth was they were finished.
When House of Fraser opened in Belfast, loads of staff who worked in Debenhams left and moved over. Debenhams used to be manic with the Blue Cross sales they started on Thursday then ran to Sunday, then it was to Monday and finally to Tuesday. The last one I went in for a nose you could see the tumbleweed rolling down the isles. I was shocked at how empty it was at the start of a sale. I said I thought our Debenhams would be closing, but people said no way, yet the smaller one in Derry closed first and then Belfast.
