Yes, it would be interesting to see if the study was financed by Boots/cosmetic industry.

No Julius i meant who did the scientific study? ....any info is welcome of course and I'm not dissing you i just question everything ...any surveys studies etc....not always black and white inmho that's all ....k

I am trying to find the study that formed the basis of my article that I wrote in 2008. I shall probably dig it out soon. In the meantime here are some interesting links together with an article that casts the benefits of these new sunscreens into question:-

The key point of the report (see the first link above) is:

"Previous work has shown that titanium dioxide doped with manganese is more effective than titanium dioxide alone in reducing photo-degradation of organic UV filters. From the data presented in this article, we can conclude that, by incorporating the Mn-doped TiO2 as a predispersion, an even greater improvement in photo-stability is achieved."

It discusses various works that proven that manganese-doped titanium dioxide (Optisol) is an effective free radical scavenger. It's hard to know what makes it so effective.

I will try to get more study information and find out about the financing and impartiality of the study.

Thanks, but so far you've shown no independent research so I'm hopeful that we'll see a report that hasn't been written by employees or contractors working for pharmaceutical companies who might have vested interests in promoting certain products. Why was Boots alone mentioned in the first report?

I will contact the manufacturers and find the research, as well as who it was commissioned and funded by. As I understand it Optisol was invented at Oxford University in 1999. It's been available commercially for over 10 years now. Anyway, I'm not going to buy Sisley, that's for sure!

Yes you are quite right Julius, I saw an article on a website called nanotechnology now, (sorry can't do links) and they say that the company called Oxonica Ltd was "sprung" from Oxford univeristy and Boots appears to have fast tracked using optisol in their Soltan products, the article was dated Feb 2005 so quite a while I don't pretend to understand some of the more technical terms but some of it makes interesting reading. Glad I cancelled my advanced order ultrasun Tsv now, thanks :mysmilie_59:

Yes, I think Optisol is, on balance, a good thing. I just looked on the internet to see what Boots have to say about such ingredients. I found an interesting press release. They seem to err on the side of caution. I really don't think it would be in their best interests to produce, commission, sponsor or endorse a product that would poison everyone or make them ill, particularly something like a sunscreen that is a widely used family product. I do recall reading the independent research but have yet still to find it. In the meantime here's Boots's statement on sunscreen / nanoparticulate ingredients:

Also I know I'm just one little person in the world but I have personally used Soltan since 2007 (after I sunburned playing frisbee in Paris) and have never had a problem with it. For my eye area (as Alison Young would say) I use a Clarins mineral SPF 30 but for the rest of my face I use Soltan Face Once (If going out for a long time) or Soltan Baby if just going out for 2-3 hours.

I've been using the Soltan Face Once the last 3 days as was on holiday and walked 22km one day in sun and wind. I was fine even my nose was OK. OH had a burnt forehead as he refused it. However he did use it the next day. I put it on under moisturiser and then one day a L'Oreal BB cream and the next day the Judith Williams Diamond makeup.

See! Soltan does work. Sorry he burnt but he should have applied Soltan Once. One application would have prevented it!

Anyone remember have many auto delivery drops there were with this TSV another parcel has turned up the 3rd and i thought there was only two drops?
