I was born in east London 1955, the area was populated by Eastern European refugees of many religions. Mainly tailors, seamstresses, fabrics, street markets.

One of the words I picked up young was ‘schmatta’.

This looks like a (very expensive) smutter. On my tv, the fabric looks like unpressed felt. And, as usual with many of Marla's jackets, it is very short and wide. I don't like the colour either. Something cheap about it.

I’d not seen this jacket before but agree with you. I have been the black with dark red flowers on in similar design. Fabric reminds me of the curtains in our local pub back in the late 1960s.

I keep imagining it being worn on a windy day and the wearer taking off into the air like Mary Poppins.

Same background for me. Whenever we had a family occasion, Christening, wedding, etc. it was a standing joke that all the men would feel one another's jacket lapels and say "That's a lovely bit of schmatta". In those post-war days men had only one suit.

My Yiddish is extremely limited, my parents know much more than me!!!

I know, that’s why I used it ! Rag is the perfect word for this jacket, it’s a disgrace and I imagine Glenn was embarrassed to be seen with it.
