I don’t know how this all works with 1001 different genders, but I thought UK paternity leave was 2 weeks and maternity leave was 52 weeks. Does that mean if it’s two Dads they each get two weeks and if two Mums they each get a year? I get sooo flipping confused with all the gender malarkey.

The law for 52 weeks applies to the person who has had the baby. The 2 weeks to their partner. I don't believe gender is even mentioned. That's a statutory minimum, but employment contracts/agreements may offer more. I think QVC presenters are self-employed, and often have flexible terms etc.
 
Must be unpaid leave. She can't be on maternity leave.

How does that work then ? My dad along with thousands of others certainly didn't (or wasn't entitled) to weeks off. Mum gave birth and he had the day off then it was back to work.

So, is Chloe taking the woman's prerogative of taking months off too, like her wife ?
She can take time off, but she won't be paid.

That's why I asked Batti ! We live in a world where you think of a number, double it, take away the number and divide by 9 then hopefully you come up with the right gender and pronoun! All ****** absurd.

The law has thankfully changed in the last 70 years so that partners get the opportunity (2 weeks paid I think) to bond with the baby and help the mother.

I hope I didn’t offend anyone but I really wanted to know how it all worked with all these different proclivities. Perhaps we should ask Alison Young?🤣
 
I think you can share maternity/paternity leave. So if mum wants to go back to work earlier, the partner can use her maternity leave. My daughter is NHS and she could share it with her partner. Don’t ask me how that works….daughter didn’t want to give up her leave anyway lol
 
Some employers offer enhanced maternity leave packages. Where I work they've recently started offering six months full-pay, four months half-pay and then it reduces again for the final two months. You also accrue holiday entitlement (including the bank holidays) while on mat leave, which most people use to extend their leave, or retain full-pay in the second half of it. Parents can share the leave entitlement. It's rare that they do but sometimes there's a good reason - offer of promotion etc.
 
Going back some years over here it was well known for new mums when their leave was ending going to the doctor and getting sick notes. Making sure not to sleep well the night before the GP appointment, crying when there, that the baby won't sleep etc. It was all put on, and they would admit it to friends to get an extra few months off.
 
A few years ago, I remember that a few women I worked with came back after maternity leave and then handed their notice in after a couple of weeks being back at work. Have a vague recollection that if they informed their employers in writing that they were coming back to work and then didn’t, they’d have to pay back some of their maternity pay. Not sure if this was the law or just our company’s ruling.

I had a maternity cover job that terminated the day the mother came back to work. She handed her notice in two weeks later. Company offered me the position full time and I stayed there for 15 years until they relocated to Poland.
