Ah, I see. I said to Mr MK last night about dipping into the xmas chocolate stash as there would be more arriving any day...good job we didn't cave in! I'm not in a rush, I just always worry when something takes so long 'in process'.

I'm afraid Etonian habits die hard, but I baulk at the mere IDEA of eating Thorntons chocolates. They are too common! Second in commonness only to the likes of Milk Tray and all that other Cadbury rubbish they now make in POLAND! (Yuck!) The other day a colleague of mine gave me a bar of Fry's Turkish Delight, and it tasted nothing like the real Turkish Delight I had when I visited Turkey! Mind you, I did used to like the advert for it:

Julius - did you go to Eton by any chance? Only a stab in the dark of course, I could be totally wrong ;-) And, I thought you were from Poland??

I went there for one year (scholarship) and absolutely HATED it. I was born in Brighton to an English mother and Lithuanian father and lived in Vilnius for the early years of my life, where I went to Vilniaus Uzupio Gimnazija (VUG). Here is an article about my area. There are some nice pics at the foot of the piece.

That looks lovely Julius! A very nice piece with lovely photographs.

I was pulling your leg about the Eton thing, as you seemed to mention it in every post ysterday. You were in danger of turning into Uncle Albert - "During the war..." Haha :mysmilie_17::wink:

Vienna, dare I suggest that you and I may be of an age when we had 5 boys and 5 girls bars?

Also remember when you could get Frys fruit flavoured bars as well as mint cream.

I was more of a sweet rather than chocolate person. Loved, and still do, sugared almonds, iced carmels, cherry lips and good strong liquorice.

And I think we all miss Spangles, I liked the black packet but they were not as popular and harder to get.

I,loved spangles ...although my hubby says his bro nearly choked to death on one ...awkward square shape and got lodged! ..hubby is 4 years older than me and remembers ...five boys and girls lol.....a web site called ....aquarterof.co.uk ....sells lots of the old sweets ....sweet tobacco! Yummy loved it ...that's in there and chew nuts lol:mysmilie_59:

According to the press there will be a severe chocolate shortage by 2020. It seems producers can`t keep up with demand, the price of cocoa beans has doubled and there is a shortage of beans because a large percentage are grown in Africa and the Ebola outbreak is stopping export of them. Sounds like a good excuse for chocolate companies to shrink their bars and put up prices again. On the other hand anybody wishing to stockpile, feel free ...

Yes I loved sweet tobacco. Don't be tempted by these companies selling retro sweets, they are nothing like the real thing, look similar but the taste is all wrong, I know because we purchased a big box full and had to throw over half out, pure sugar.

By any chance do you like coconut?

My husband has a real sweet tooth for chocolate. By about 2018 he WILL start stockpiling but as he will be on the pension by then I will have to keep an eye on him!

OMG I loved the Fry's fruit bar!!!!!!!!! Also Spangles but do not remember the Five Boys/Girls. Mind you we only had one small village shop so not the widest stock choice! Never heard of the tobacco sweet either, although I do enjoy the real thing!!

I don't actually remember what the 5 Boys/girls choc was like but the wrapper had the faces of 5 boys or 5 girls (I think in circles like a cameo) in a very 30's way.

The sweet tobacco came in a mock pouch like loose tobacco and tasted like coconut. It was not very common, hardly anyone I know ever heard of it.

I am stockpiling around my hips!

I don't eat chocolate, but mum bought a bag of Thorntons classics - 8 sweets in the bag - in Home Bargains, for 69p.

They can up the prices yet again....and using that shocking killer disease as an excuse in my humble opinion ....:mysmilie_51:

I gave up boxed chocolates when Rowntrees sold off Black Magic. I knew where I was with the fillings and centres of those old chocs, -the toffee and mallow, cherry cup, coffee cream, nut cracknel and the rest, - but now all the fancy 'chocolatiers' have gone down the route of 'sludge' - so who knows whats in those ganache, truffle and mousse fillings - certainly the 'menus' sound inviting, but I can never distinguish the 'Moroccan oranges' from the 'champagne truffle' - its all 'gacky' to me.

BUT, I have now found my all time favourite chocs, NEVER to be shared with anyone. Chardonnel & Walker really salted caramel chocolate balls. Hugely expensive at £9.99 from Waitrose, but oh they are soooo orgasmically good !!!!

Couldn't agree more on indistinguishable boxed chocolates. Thorntons and nestle the worst offenders IMHO. But do find most Hotel Chocolat flavours and 'designs' taste as they are described and like what they contain!

But I'm afraid I hate your favourites! I was given a box of the C & H salted caramels last year. I usually love salted caramel (or any caramel to be fair!) and I was so excited by the stunning box and knowing it was a luxury brand etc... But I put one in my mouth and almost spat it out! Maybe it was just me but I strongly disliked them. Good job we're all different ;) If I am lucky enough to receive any more I shall generously give them to my sister in law!
Have you tried any of their other chocolates?

My tsv arrived today, before a visit to my mums who plied me with more Thorntons and tins of M&S xmas biscuits :-( I had 3 Alpinis before departing, would it be wrong to return it?! I wouldn't give these as gifts as they can be bought in the pound shop, ha ha! I am already sick of the sight of chocolate and it's not even xmas!! (My mum is impossible to say no to so that's not an option!)

Aww May, that's sad, but I bet you have amazing and cherished memories.

Yes, my mother certainly likes to give us girls lots of things. We always come away from there with at least 2 carrier bags of stuff she has bought for us since our last visit - usually all food. She makes me giggle! She had, rather annoyingly, bought some Thorntons from Q a week before the TSV for a higher cost. She has boxes for the street and their dogs!! I guess I'll hang onto them, not worth the hassle returning them for £23. Am sure hubby will polish them over over the next 6 months :mysmilie_17::mysmilie_5:
