I can't help except to say get the most indestructible plants you can!
I have a money plant which I haven't killed, also a spider plant (I detatch and kill the babies, as otherwise there would be no space in my home for me!). I have had both for over 20 years and despite under, or over watering them, thy have just kept on chugging along.
I also have an aloe vera plant which is proving as indestructible, as it has been going for 11 years now.
I have another plant, which I don't know what it's called which has also been going for 11 years, but is not looking very flourishing - it has a long thin main stem which looks almost scaly, as the think spikey leaves grow directly out of it - it seems to be suffering more than most for it's time in my "care".
I have a miniature orchid I picked up in IKEA - that seems to like neglect, and the more I neglect it the more it flowers... so I think anyone who thinks orchids are difficult, high-maintenance plants which need specialist care just hasn't got the right kind. I think mine's a phaleonopsis (sp).
I have a chrysanthemum plant, but unfortunately despite my best efforts, that died quite quickly - it lasted from June to October last year... a 10 day holiday in Italy put paid to it... now that WAS high-maintenance!
What kind of plants do you have, ONNSA?
