Mr L was rushed into hospital on Monday and there is only 1 hour visiting PER WEEK. The hospital is some distance away and I don’t drive so I would have had to book into a hotel near the hospital if it was normal visiting. I think he may be out before I get the allocated hour!!
Only found out today you no longer can phone the ward to ask for progress, you have to “book” a return call through a call centre. I booked a call this morning and it’s now 7pm and they haven’t called. Mr L went through his op, stayed in recovery ward and now back to main ward and phoned me a few times and they still never called to say he had/hadn’t survived!!

he said the nurses are so young but really caring. However said the anaesthetist was the most arrogant woman he has encountered for some time and his throat and mouth are grazed with the tubes.

I hope you're BOTH okay.

My friend had a crappy anaesthetist, too. Scraped her throat and broke both her front teeth. I was shocked to learn that this is quite common (as it certainly didn't seem common years ago) and that when you sign the consent form (or, as in my friend's case. her next of kin as it was an emergency) you sign away any right to complain or have financial compensation for broken teeth.

I mentioned this to my dentist who said that those in the know going in for planned ops have been getting shields made up with him.

I think I wrote in another post that I refused the anaesthetist allocated to my op. I asked to meet him/her before the op and she was the rudest cow on the planet sneering at me questioning her ability. No, I was seeing if I wanted to put my life in her hands which I didn't. Instead I got a very lovely man and all was well.

LATI I hope your husband is doing OK and makes a speedy recovery.

He has been crippled with sciatica since lockdown (for ages saying it was arthritis) on one leg and then a month ago on the other. Coupled with a cold which never seemed to abate it started to really get him down as he couldn’t sleep, sit and walking became very difficult. Then he started to have bladder problems, put it down to the cold but on Monday had enough and called doctor again who insisted he went to A&E immediately. They took a MRI and said he had to be taken by ambulance to another hospital for an op. I was given an hour to gather up a bag, phone a friend for a lift and meet him in a car park outside A&E to do hand over. Despite the rush by 3am he still hadn’t been moved was shoved on a trolly. The ambulance took him at 6am Tues and he was put on a fast to have op but each time they appeared with food he knew it wasn’t going to happen!
Had the op 9am this morning and apart from BP through the roof seems to be doing well. Apparently there was an abscess on a disc(I think) which they scraped away. In one way it was wonderful it happened so quickly but on the other it was frightening as I know lots of people who are on waiting lists for years so we wondered if it was something more sinister. The options given was leave it and possibly in wheelchair in a few months, take the risk of spinal surgery and something going wrong or it not solving the problem - really no choice at all. Especially stressful as he has never been overnight in hospital in his 70 years,

Speaking to a work colleague who also has sciatica he mentioned that his physio kept asking if he had bladder problems which he couldn’t understand the connection but apparently it can result in pressure on bladder and bowels resulting in having no control over them (doesnt bear thinking about). Anyone with sciatica should keep this in mind as it wasn’t something we would have known about until it became critical.

Just need to get him home away from danger of infection or COVID.

The above friend has been fantastic helping me and I went in to work to take my mind off it as I was climbing the walls at homenot being able to do anything and now cleared up to take off whatever time I need when he gets home (would have done anyway but now know I’m not leaving stuff half done so one less thing on my mind).

thanks for your good wishes. Sorry for long winded post.

LATI , don't we absolutely go through it eh ? Its bad enough to cope with stuff like this when we're younger, but somehow as we get older every 'issue' becomes Everest to climb. Its exhausting.

Thankfully and hopefully your man is now free of pain and will be home soon. Astonishing isn't it, we were all being ushered out of hospital not so long ago for fear of contracting MRSA, now its a double whammy with Covid ! There was something to be said when there used to be 'infection hospitals' decades ago. We need to go back to the days of actually smelling disinfectant when we walked into a hospital.

I know what I can smell when I have to go into hospital and its not disinfectant sadly

There was a lot to say for the cast iron matron. He can’t sing the praises high enough of the nurses and young doctors. Said there is a very young staff nurse/sister who if she wasn’t there the ward would fall to pieces. She has a distinctive name and he hears it being called continuously.

he is optimistic at getting discharged today but as he needs transport home I think he is getting his hopes up too much but perhaps tomorrow.

Great news, LATI.

I read your post with interest as my OH has sciatica and I have a spinal nerve problem. I get lots of back pain and UTIs and am always asked if I have any of the 'red flags' bladder or bowel wise.

I'm relieved for you that he's out of hospital. I worked in one for years and have developed a deep dislike for them as they're not run properly these days. If they were cleaned properly it would be a good start but contractors that think flushing a toilet is cleaning it is not the way to go. Bring back Matron and get rid of the contractors. Management should be doing spot checks periodically to see if THEY would accept conditions.

I worked in a GUM clinic where the staff was responsible for the toilets and no cleaners employed. You could eat your dinner off the floor in ours. The kind of samples we asked patients to provide made it essential that spillages were cleaned up ASAP! If someone wasn't busy they'd check the loo. I know ours was a small unit but cleaners are employed to do a job and they should do it properly.

I'd ask everyone here to complain to the hospital and ask for a reply if they encounter a dirty toilet or a doctor that doesn't wash their hands before examining you. Tweet or use Facebook. Name and shame. It's a start at the bottom for getting hospitals clean again.
