Yes, an utter crud record by anyone's standards. Another one I vaguely remember was by two tailors' dummies (sorry, Peter and Gordon) - A World Without Love. What a dirge.

It was. Didn't they decide to put words to the theme tune of the programme? Or was that Nick Berry who did that? I know he did the Heartbeat theme. Either or.

And I once stood behind Nick Berry in the M&S Simply Food in Islington about 20 years ago, I used to work in the area. Also used to see Su Pollard and Linda Robson, they both lived around there.

Yes, just remembered that, it was Anita Dobson and called Everyone Can Fall in Love (I think).

Even if the show is bordering its 40th birthday. And he lives in the same town as me. Haven't seen him for ages, but he's still around and looks older than his years. White hair, beard.
Good call Muttley - that song is an abomintation! I don't know how I missed it!.... and the way she goes all "throaty" when she sings the line "I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed 'em what I've got"!
A lot of the dross in the charts back in the day came by courtesty of Actors/soap stars. Telly Savalas didn't even bother to sing...he talked, then you've got Denis Waterman, David Soul (though I admit Silver Lady is a guilty pleasure) but the rest is awful, Jason Donovan - Just no! and tbh I don't rate Kylie's singing voice at all but at least she's had some catchy/danceable numbers written for her and she's got the look and the vibe.
Almost as bad as Charlene's caterwauling atrocity...does anyone remember Berni Flint? If I remember rightly he won Opportunity Knocks and I thought he was really good looking, but his song " I don't want to put no hold on you" was pitchy and pathetic, but guess what? I bought it (I was only 13 at the time so please forgive me!)

Seen Bernie Flint a few times on cruises. He's a very funny man and reminds everyone he is the longest Opportunity Knocks winner.
I don't know who he is!I liked him, but when as Hutch, he began singing in S&H, it seemed odd.
Very potted history. University Challenge, over here, was based on a show he did in the US. If it wasn't for him, 'we' wouldn't have that show. He also did a show called Password, where he met and fell for, Betty White. (Her of the Golden Girls fame, etc). They married.
Youtube has his songs: all 'standards', as opposed to 'by' him, but not bad, in my opinion.Occasionally I do catch some of the old TOTP shows when I'm flicking channels. It makes me giggle to see those teenagers sitting there or standing rigid whilst being forced to listen some boring middle of the road act (which would probably appeal to their grandparents more) trying unsuccessfully not to look bored stiff. I realise not every song is going to be something you can dance or sing along to. There's been some beautiful ballads and love songs over the years and for the young 'uns if it's being sung by their handsome teen idol then it's an absolute joy. Look at the poor kids having to put up with this in 1979, and what's more how the chuffin' hell did that manage to get to no.1 and stay there for 3 weeks?
I decided to delve a bit deeper to find out how a song like this managed to cross over from appearances on the likes of Stars on Sunday and the Val Doonican show etc to the mainstream chart and even more so to the No.1 spot. I found a lengthy discussion and I thought these two comments were worth putting on here for your persusal

My only lasting memory of this ghastly slice of God-bothering was the playground chatter that “punks had been seen buying it”. This may have been the Big Bang of postmodern irony. Or it may have been for their mums.
In a way it’s an anthem for that parallel ’70s, the one you glimpse in the corners of old television shows, briefly infringing on the glitter and the now-ness upfront – the world of the prematurely old and disappointed, the ladies in their best Songs of Praise hats, the men scowling at the dollybirds.

I’ve no recall whatsoever of this song, which is very odd since it comes bang in the middle of the period when I was obsessing about the charts. I must have simply blocked it out as a song for the oldies, people who were teens in the 50s or something. It’s certainly a curious song to find at the top of the charts at this time, it’s kind of as if the Beatles etc had never happened…

Quietly, Very Confused
Not sure this counts as "random rubbishy", but I was reminded of it earlier and though some might like to hear/see it again. I'd never seen the video until today.
