As we've been chuckling about Gammon perfume, I remembered a comedy sketch.

On Victoria Wood As Seen on TV years ago Patricia Routedge used to do a comedy monologue. She was called Kitty and similar to Hyacinth Bouquet who she played later. The character lived in Cheshire and was quite snooty and opinionated.

Kitty was telling the audience about meeting somebody and asking them "What's that terrible smell?" She was told "It's Ma Griffe" (a perfume). To which she replied with impeccable timing "Well it wants washing"🤣

Mike Reid just said in a clip from the 1980 Christmas show “This is my mother-in-law” when standing next to a giant model polar bear. “Anyway - her mouth is that big,” he added. Just the sort of up-to-date patter that is currently being used on Ideal World at times 44 years later.
My dad used to do that joke but with Zelda from Terrahawks

I remember seeing her on New Faces when I was about 12. Just her and a piano. A little bit social observational lyrics wise like Jake Thackray. An innocent charm and a great witty insight into the ludicrous nature of our lives. Some people stars wise who die, you say ‘oh dear , how sad’ and shrug your shoulders and rapidly move on. Others, like her, and for me in particular, David Bowie, you still miss and think of regularly. Miss for their supreme talents in their field and the imprints they made upon you and your life.

I thought she was a genius, one of many very talented people we lost in 2016. I loved George Michael, and I think of him most days.

Yes, and George. My partner is a great fan of him. We watched on Netflix over the Christmas period, a documentary based upon the career of Wham. not one of those dreadful cheapskate, talking unknown heads type documentaries, but one featuring the actual people involved and the words of George himself. The interesting thing was, looking at the young George, he very much a tubby, bespectacled not very attractive young boy, and seeing then the amazing transformation he went through to pop superstar. The band, which I had no idea of previously, initially was very much revolving around Andrew Ridgeley, formed by him and with him putting in most of the musical input. As the documentary went on you saw the progression of George and how, not through any malicious intent, Andrew was gradually marginalised to a background performer. But from the interviews and comments of both Andrew and George, there seemed genuine goodwill towards the other, with Andrew accepting that George was such an exceptional talent, that it was only right for him to go out on his own in the end. I think George was a genuinely kind and humane person doing much work, behind-the-scenes in charitable terms without wanting to blow his own trumpet about it like some others do. He was a genuine songwriting talent and superb performer. The person I compare him to most is Freddie Mercury, and I think that is a fitting compliment.

Ooh, Jazzy, do they work, those chargers on normal batteries?
I’ve nearly bought one soooo many times, and then not done it, thinking they aren’t rechargeable batteries so it can’t work.
I always wanted someone whose opinion I could trust to tell me if they worked or not.
Do they? The ones from Amazon?
🙏
They work fine, If you haven’t totally drained the battery’s

And Victoria Wood often gave away the best lines in the sitcom Dinnerladies. And In the early well known sketch called Two Soups Victoria wasn't even in it, it was Julie Walters, Celia Imrie and Duncan Preston.

But some of her work was quite deep, like the sketch where she's a schoolgirl who is going to swim the channel and her parents aren't there to see her off, deciding to have a short break in London Instead. By the end of the sketch no-one knows what has happened to her as she hasn't turned up anywhere.

I always thought Acorn Antiques was quite brilliantly observed. Based on the appalling Crossroads with its wobbly scenery, terrible acting and extras saying ‘Rhubarb-Rhubarb’, it was both supremely accurate of its target and hilarious to watch. Like all the top comedians, there was an air of sadness about her, and as you say, also in some of her work. She would have done an absolutely marvellous pastiche on shopping television. She would have seen its many unintentionally hilarious failings and made the most of them.

I’m really worried now. Watching the flavorcast demo and mr expert chef failing to clean the pan with a wad of kitchen towel said they couldn’t have water in the kitchen because of the electrics. I have a sink and taps with both hot and cold running water in my kitchen, should I be scared 😱 no one told me it isn’t safe to have water near my cooker, is my kitchen safe or should I ring a plumber to remove the water pipes asap, advise please, 😱
