...... times were changing, tech was changing, for so long mechanical watches had dominated ...... then quartz revolution started .....
I was looking in a jeweller's window when I saw a sign saying "Some day, all watches will be like this".

It was a SEIKO quartz ANALOGUE watch (with hands); there had prviously been digital quartz watches. It was probably the early 1970's and I was into tech and new gadgets even then, so I bought one. I was probably one of the first people to get this new technology.

It lasted many years, then I cracked the glass so replaced it with their latest model (I still have both of them).

These days I still use an analogue quartz watch, but now it is solar powered so never needs batteries, and is radio controlled, so it is extremely accurate. BTW it also has a small digital display for the date etc.

DER for us. 22 inch colour TV in a teak effect wooden cabinet with sliding door. Three channels, no remote control and I thought it was spellbindingly brilliant. Counting the minutes to get home from school to see it for the first time. I think it was the cricket that was on the first time I saw it. Couldn’t believe it, it was amazing. The thing was, we were satisfied with so much less than today’s generation - both adults and children. I’m not going to say life was better back then, because there were many elements of it that clearly weren’t. But what I will say, is that people had much more certainty and acceptance of their lot in how they lived their lives then, with their expectations being less, and far more relaxed about their current situations, without constantly feeling they wanted and DESERVED more and more. The sense of entitlement displayed by so many people today in general is overwhelming compared to back then.
...and with so little choice, we weren't bothered about what other people had

I just typed in a long post and it seems to have disappeared

For a dead (ok, 'temporarily suspended') IW TV shopping channel, this forum/thread is doing quite well!!! 👍😃

I too have a waterproof watch.

It doesn't let a drop of water out.

😜

The old ones are the best. 👴

Your collective memories of, basically, the 70s/80s all strike a chord. My Mum collecting green shield stamps, and the rolls/lines of stamps being issued. I often had the job of sticking them in the book. Can't remember what she spent them on, just discounts off her next shop I think, in the Co-op or Happy Shopper it may have been. Not a TV!

All the mention of catalogues made me think of many an adolescent boy's first eye-opening foray into the ladies underwear section of the Grattan / Littlewoods type catalogues... 😲 But we won't go there.... 😜 Surely a right of passage for many? Now, like many things, replaced by t'internet.

There's a saying of nothing new, just reinvented. Clubcard points, Nectar, Avios, loyalty/reward points, cashback etc., all owe something to green shield stamps and similar!

Also if anyone's looking for a bit of nostalgia "The 70's supermarket" is on channel 5 tonight at 9pm. Gonna be watching with a Vesta curry followed by Angel Delight - kidding but looking forward to watching it!
Yeah I spotted that, I still have Angel,Delight at times, you mainly see strawberry and butterscotch these days

My Dad bought one of the early digital LCD solar watches, when technology was progressing so quickly around this time.

Not quite this one but similar look/style/ vintage.

Still have my first Sony Walkman red plastic cassette player somewhere in the cupboards. It was like an extra appendage, never went anywhere without it and its metal-band foam-covered small headphones! 😆

I could go on at length why '22' pops up everywhere, in all sorts of places, in my life, but that's for another time/thread/forum!!! 🥺😱

Had an email from Garden Bargains.
(I had subscribed separately, but their p&p was off-putting on plant/compost offers, usually.)

SRyan's *actually" got a new Sunday gardening gig.
The video is vomit-inducing, cringe worthy at best, in the preview/site link.

You Garden company ownership/location is interesting also?

Wonder if they are just keeping the Garden Bargains name & web site running so as not to confuse former IW customers, even though when it was run by IW it was still You Gardens that administered & supplied everything.

I collected 1000s of COOP stamps, many books of them, then they dropped the scheme and they became worthless, I was furious.

Now proper Royal Mail stamps have also become worthless, even though you paid good money for them in good faith that you will be able to use them into the future.

A complete CON by the govermnent (I think they still own RM).

REMINDER - At the moment, you can still exchange them for barcoded stamps, but I don't know for how long, so don't delay if you still have some. If you use the old ones, the recipient will be "fined" a large surcharge, well over £1.

Oops. Do you remember the group The Christians from the 90s?x

Their hit, "Ideal World" ?!?!

Some of the lyrics are quite pertinent:

"In an Ideal World, we'd be free to choose,
But in the real world, bet you're gonna lose". 😬

Lyrics:

Yeah.

Was up in the loft today looking out the copy i bought way back then, 12" remix version (was into 12" singles back then).
