Julia's health scare

I have great faith in our vet. A couple of weeks ago we were at a party where the majority of the guests were medics & I talked to a retired pathologist who agreed with my jaundiced view. He said that if he thought he was really ill he'd consult his vet because a veterinary student's first two years training is spent with medical students but they don't have the arrogance of doctors. We've lost three people, including my brother in law, due to NHS negligence, know of two who died last year when life saving surgeries were cancelled & a former customer of my husband lost her leg when the district nurse service was suspended then A&E turned her away because she was being dealt with in the community. The appalling treatment I received when our baby died resulted in us making a formal complaint that went as high as things did back in 1983.

I wanted to put an angry face as the facts of your post made me angry. But I didn't want you to even think I was angry with you. I'm not angry with you but very very angry for you.

I have bad experience with NHS staff and diagnosis. Some NHS staff are great but unfortunately lots of bad ones.

Sending you hugs T. X

My mom had MDS, which the literature they give you, mentions CML and others, I think they are similar but obviously not the same. My mother got MDS from having a rare cancer Waldenstrom, which they believe is genetic, as it’s rare we had to research from America. Her brother had it too, and maybe another, but from the MDS she eventually developed AML, which is the quickest and most deadly of these types of cancers, and that was rapid to say the least . I hope that isn’t the same with Julia’s CML
Blood cancers are not pretty, my mom was black at times, even the drs and nurses used to turn there heads and gasp. So I wish her all the best for the future.

I am so sorry, poor lady that sounds absolutely awful.

I meant to say, from that one slow developing cancer, Waldenstrom’s she developed the MDS and from that the AML, but she kept going, I still can’t believe what she went through, but my dad used to say when she was younger ‘she’s like an old cart horse. She just keeps going’ ! We’re Irish lol Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts .

Ours still isn’t doing face to face appointments & all doors are locked. You ring for an appointment & are lucky if you’re less than twentieth in the queue to be answered (often it just cuts out ) then if lucky you may get a phone appointment for several days later, mostly you’re told to phone 111. It’s been dreadful. Not as if it’s a busy city practice, it’s a tiny village one in an old terraced cottage.
Personally, I’ve twice been told they referring me for an X-ray after tripping & falling down concrete steps last May, couldn’t move for nearly an hour & nobody around to help me up. Been in pain ever since but still no X-ray appointment come through, they hadn’t passed the referral on. They just sent all patients to a centre for COVID jabs

That's the same as ours, the only practice for the town & totally useless. I'm so sorry that they haven't arranged your x-ray, that warrants an official complaint.

I recently joined the patient participation group (PPG) for our local practice and will be attending a meeting on Monday evening. My first question will be “for how much longer are our GPs going to be working from home?”

I personally haven‘t had a problem since the pandemic started - yet. I’ve had three phone ”consultations” and two face to face appointments which were suggested by the doctor, rather than me. They were linked to my underactive thyroid and whether my medication needed to be changed. I was also sent to the hospital for an ultrasound on my thyroid.

However, it’s clear what pressure the NHS in the hospitals is under. My ex fell after a golf ball headed towards him during a golfing holiday and he couldn’t move. They took him back to the golfing complex in a golf cart and rang for an ambulance. He sat in the golf cart for 12 hours until the ambulance turned up. They also had to wait 3 hours outside the hospital before he was taken in. So that was a total of 15 hours from the time he fell to the time he was seen by a doctor. This meant his sitting in agony with ……. a broken hip, as the ball joint at the top of his femur had sheered off. 😳 He subsequently needed a total hip replacement which he had the following day.

The next problem was getting him home as he had the accident in Kings Lynn and we live in Northants. The hospital turned his care over to our local practice and he’s been waiting for 5 weeks for physiotherapy to be arranged, while hobbling around on crutches.

Most of us are double jabbed and many, including me, have had their booster so why on earth the GPs can’t go back to pre-pandemic appointments, beggars belief! It might at least take the pressure off the hospitals because some people are going to A&E with minor issues that a GP could sort out.

I previously posted slating my GP practice as they had posted their working hours on their website and not one of the GPs worked anything close to full time hours. However, they have now started an online system where you can post your issue, upload photos if appropriate and you are guaranteed a reply within a stated timescale. This has worked out well for a family member, he got a reply and a face to face consultation and he is now referred to a specialist for the original issue and a physiotherapist for another ongoing issue !

On the other hand my youngest daughter has moved and while registering with her new GP, she developed a rash, she called her new practice and was told sorry we don't deal with rashes, you need to see a pharmacist who can assess it and prescribe if necessary. Off she went to a pharmacy only to be told sorry only a doctor can prescribe any cream that would help!
