Help Support ShoppingTelly:

Reading Donna's post, about entering the Debenham's competitions, reminded me of one thing that really, really annoys me these days. In a lot of magazines, other things as well sometimes, they run competitions that you have to enter on Facebook. Why if we spend money on a magazine can we not enter it's competitions in the good old way by post? Why should non Facebook members be excluded when you've bought the magazine like other readers? Think it's unfair.

i joined kicking and screaming. finally caved in with a 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em' attitude when i left work. i surprised myself by liking it. some people post odd things but the vast majority of what gets in my news feed is very funny jokes, gorgeous pet pictures, people's photos that i really want to see and fascinating updates from people/things that i subscribe to, like nasa, rafa nadal, bon jovi. i'm not a member of the qvc group.

i did briefly join twitter, soleley to follow the reconstruction of the moon landing on the 40 year anniversary and found twitter is the site where people post minutia of their daily lives - got up, cut my toenails, had toast. i don't get that on facebook, not with the people i'm connected to anyway.

i agree with everything that's said about phone calls, letter writing etc, wholeheartedly but i'm realistic and in practice, it doesn't happen, not with my family and friends anyway. also those forms of communication and facebook aren't mutually exclusive. of course i still phone and see my close friends but some of them are also on facebook and i like to see the photos they post etc. when i'm not personally in their company. i also have family and friends around the world and the time difference makes phoning impractical (and expensive). it's also a nice way to stay friends with people you may not be bosom buddies with but like to stay in touch with.

it's a shame it's unpopular here because i was going to say i will miss people here if the forum does go belly up and IF anyone wanted, they could contact me on facebook. looks like that's a non-starter ;)

I did suggest starting a FB group for us all not associated with ST.com but Sazza told me there was a ST group so I assumed it was frowned upon. I'd be more than happy to set up a group we can all join, as back up in case the forum goes or is out of order :D

We would all still use the forum, it'll just be another place to 'connect' with the friends we've made!

From mobile, please excuse any silly errors!! :)

Myself and a group of friends started our own Fb group called the Witches Coven. Nothing to do with halloween btw, it was just a nme we thought of at the time. The posts can only be seen by members of the coven not by all your other friends or family on your FB. We all live in different parts of the country and can ring each other individually but the coven gives us opportunity to talk all together. Because its a private group we can discuss more personal things and post more personal pics. It works well and i think an ST facebook group would too.

I was thinking of a private group too Vienna. No presenters or anything ;)

I'll set it up and let you know when it's sorted :D

Wonder what the rest of us can do who have no interest in joining Facebook? Guess we could always resort to good old letter-writing!

It will be a real shame to see this site fold (not saying it's going to happen but, to be realistic, I guess it's a possibility) because it's brought lots of people together to share thoughts and opinions on a huge variety of subjects, not always to do with TV shopping. Like many other members, I've made some very special friends on here and I would like those friendships to continue well into the future but, sadly for me, I'm afraid that won't be through the likes of Facebook.

Stuck for a name!! Answers on a postcard please :D

I know BL. I would be quite sad to.lose touch with some people I've 'met' on here. Here's hoping it'll carry on forever :D

Bugger!! I have to add friends before I can start the group and I have none that share in my secret addiction!! If anyone is willing for me to add them as a personal friend in order to get the group started please pm me! I will delete you once you have served your purpose, ha ha!!

well i would join obviously as i like facebook but if there's a group already, why don't we join that?

the only problem i see is, if hopefully, this forum keeps going for many a year, with so many members strongly disliking facebook, they're not going to join and we could end up with a kind of us and them? would not want that to happen.

i do understand BL and i just posted of my fear of an us and them before i read your post. but never say never - i did but i don't regret joining ;)

I see it as a contingency plan, in case this site disappears.

Unless we set something up in advance and we join, we will all lose touch with each other if this site goes.

However, I wouldn't actually use the FB group if this site survives.

It's never going to be a replacement for this site. It's just somewhere else, somewhere we can talk more freely without Q staff nosing or being moderated too heavily :D

I rarely post on FB but I use it mainly for their online games. I`m a keen scrabbler and find their scrabble app the best online. I play people from all over the world and with friends too. It has its uses and like most sites its ok in moderation. I know people who log onto FB almost 24/7 which wouldnt do for me but there are lots of other sites people log onto 24/7 too, not just FB. I used to frequent an american forum and i swear some people must be logged onto it every minute of their lives.

I, too love it for the scrabble.

Same here Busy and FF. But don't be too hasty, I have faith in Graham and I'm sure he will fight back and keep this site going.

I would happily join a group to keep in touch with all you guys. But (forgive me for saying this) I am not yet old enough to be wistful of the olden days of landlines if you are lucky and letter writing. My problem is not with the concept of facebook, it's how they automatically go into your contacts list and your photos, without being asked. I don't necessarily want every old contact to know I am on FB. I want to keep many aspects of my life private. I just gon't know how to put control of all of that back into my own hands. Until then I steer clear. I just don't trust it. As for Twitter, it is just a forum for abuse. I am the first person to believe in free speech, but people on twitter are free to either berate you for disagreeing with them or berate you for saying what you think! Why can't people just say what they think on a topic and leave it at that? Disagree if you like but don't be abusive. I know I am probably being unrealistic as people can be a**eholes so I avoid altogether. I just know that if they met me face to face I would be happy to say what I think to their face (I strongly belive if you don't have the guts to do that don't say it at all). I guess I am saying that the internet provides an invisible shield for cowards, and this puts me off those sites.
