Anyone else hear the T caller David ring in and say how pilates had changed his life. He was all emotional and started crying .

I sent for one of these contraptions last year as I have joint problems and thought the low impact would help. It weighs a ton (literally) and could not be moved by one person (me) alone as it's so heavy. It does not fold up easily for storage as they claim. Whe I ordered one, it was around £270, now it's £100 more and I can't see a difference, so what's the extra £100 for? Mine had the boingy boingy thing. The best exercise you get from it is putting the damn thing together. :wonder:

Needless to say, mine went back. You need a spare room where you can keep it up all the time - and have somewhere in there where you can watch the DVD at the same time as exercising. I'm not that fortunate!

As for JR and polio, are you sure she just didn't mean she ate polos as a child??

Everyone I've seen who had poliio was left physically deformed - e.g. Ian Dury.

In my younger years, I used to have this giant elastic strip to exercise with and it was great and took up no space at all when it wasn't being used. I used to aerobics, dance, tai chi, swimming, squash - everything. And for what? To end up with bones riddled with osteoporosis, arthritis and almost constant pain.

You and me both Moth. I did gymnastics, hockey, netball, football, athletics, you name it. Then in my thirties once my knee injury (!!) had subsided, I did the gym and aerobics several times a week. Now I'm arthritic through crohns, and also have osteoarthritis on the duff knee and severe back pain. I can't go for long walks, I can't even go for short flaming walks, I can't even get around the sodding supermarket without needing a rest from the pain. I've put on weight (which doesn't help) but I don't eat bad things (well not that many!!) and the docs tell me to exercise! :headbang:
I'd LOVE to! Grrrrrrr
I can't even do swimming now since the eeejit that last operated on my duff knee cocked it up even more.

Give me some sodding steroids and I will happily exercise - but they pigging well won't, not even a short course when I am due to go on hols so I can enjoy myself for once without scouring the landscape for a bench to sit on.

The only way I seem to lose weight is through emotional stress and not eating at all when I'm at work because I don't have time to eat, but even that doesn't work very well.

*rant over*

I bought one of these machines years ago & do like using it & WOULD IF I could leave it out all the time ( am looking at re-arranging the spare bedroom!)
At the moment it is gathering dust under the stairs, as others have said it is too heavy to drag out & use all the time. They make it look easy to move around, it isn't.

You made me laugh Lottie...they tell me to exercise too but quite apart from the arthritis I haven't got the breath! They said try singing..oh ****** hell, that would give everyone earache and ok it might exercise my lungs but it wouldn't help my hips! (laying off the Wispa Golds probably would tho!)

... I'm sure she's said in the past that it's left her with a withered or weak left leg ...

I was somewhat inspired by the possibilities of the pilates machine as I am as stiff as a board these days. I think Marj talks a lot of sense when she says that people who have injuries are frightened to exercise for fear of making their problems worse. I went on to ebay instead and bought a magic ring with a DVD for £12.99. If I use it alot then I might consider buying the pilates machine. Trouble is that I'll have to rearrange the sitting room to make room for it perhaps the upstairs landing?

Be careful; look at what overusing one of those did to poor Gollum

I've just started doing Nordic walking. Have breast cancer that has spread to bones (apologies to those who have heard that bit ad nauseum) and the medication has made me put on 2.5 stones in weight, not to mention everything takes much longer to do and is harder work. Anyway, decided to do some exercise but no room for a major contraption like the pilates machine and absolutely no inclination to socialise or visit the gym. Found a local walking instructor, had a taster session and then a 2 hour class and loved it. Bought my own poles which arrived on Friday and have been out yesterday in horrid weather for half an hour or so and then again today when the weather is cold but so bright and lovely. Apparently, once you've learnt the right technique, you use 90% of your major muscles, it helps people with mobility issues from say arthritis and hip/knee replacements and good for stamina. Best bit is you don't feel like you are doing anything more than a stroll but still get loads of benefit. I'm converted !! You never guessed did you??? Helps that I live by the sea and have a flat prom on my doorstep....

@Lizgregs
Getting outdoors and hearing the birds singing always makes me feel good. I suppose in your case it is hearing the waves crashing on the beach. Not so keen on those sticks as I think they do environmental damage but on the promenade they aren't going to do any harm. And there is also tyre girl who I disapprove of (I came across her whilst I was walking in Windsor Park and she was pulling a tyre!

My poles have protective pads on the ends - a bit like a variation of those you get on walking sticks - and won't see much countryside! Can safely say I won't be following the example of tyre girl. Deffo not!!!

What makes me mad about all exercise equipment that people buy is barely used...I can attest that the amount of exercise equipment that sits on the tips of the UK from my hubbie who is a Civil Engineer and has worked on projects around landfill etc.. why can't we face the fact that a small amount of us will actually use the equipment (if we have room) or that we will use those expensive gym memberships and that we would all be better off going for a good walk!

Carol - I have a clarinet which I blow on sometimes - yes it's a bit noisy, but what the heck, I'm sure it's good exercise :giggle:

By the end of the evening though, I'm usually going up the stairs like Audrey Chawner (on all fours) but I do go faster and I don't ermmmm ....how to say......break wind!

The best part of the boring day, was to see The Lump (not being rude, but she just sits like a lump during her shows) Jilly, cajoled into trying out the machine. She was sitting on what looked like a picnic coolbox, wearing a QVC sweatshirt. She got on, clinging to it for dear life and discovered she could barely move the machine. She did four little attempts and then got off. Apart from the fact that I found this amusing, despite how good the machines might be, how many do the same and then never use it again?QUOTE]

moth i saw that bit - you didn't mention how after those 4 little tries, jilly could magically touch her toes whereas she was about 4 inches short before. :wonder:

OH has a saxophone, maybe I should do a blow job on that - oops, sorry..! Doubt I could get any noise out of it and would probably collapse in a heap on the carpet! Stairs? I always use my hands as well..in fact I think it's going to be a Stannah for Xmas the rate I'm going! Perhaps eating beans before I try the stairs, I might get propelled up a bit faster..?! Oh dear, nope, not been on the spritzers but I do seem to be lowering the tone..sorry!

Since I gave up smoking 47 days ago!!, i have been walking 2 1/2 miles every morning. I hope to increase the distance soon, when my lungs are completely back to normal. I have been thinking about getting the poles - they sound really good. I walk on country lanes, so I can't see how I would be damaging the environment.

LOL Carol! :hi:
Yes Sax is the same technique as a Clarinet. They are only reed instruments, so easy to blow....not as hard as playing a trumpet imho. Although my son plays trumpet and I can't make a sound with it, yet he sounds awful when he plays my clarinet :clapping:

Try singing in the shower! Seriously, I sing (in a choir) but when I've not sung for a while and I'm about to do some again I sing every day in the shower. It helps build up your lung capacity and breath control, the steam helps your voice and the acoustics in the bathroom makes everyone sound better ; )

Knowing that Margarine is Aussie explains a lot. I turned on the telly the other morning and there she was, bending herself over some machine and encouraging us to do the same. o though 'oh flipping heck, she's followed me to Australia!'....

The only thing I've ever played is a school recorder! Not quite the same!
