A 1970's Christmas!

Of the 3 presents I remember most vividly as a young girl, one was a "Flatsy" doll when I was 9 or 10. They were small vinyl dolls with long colorful hair. I used to cart it around in the breast pocket of my jacket. When I mention it to people I just get blank looks, but I promise you that they did exist.
The others were a chain belt, and a small handbag covered in plastic "pearls". I loved that bag.
I also got a wicker carrying basket one year as there was a bit of a fad for using them for school. Bloody impractical and not a fad that lasted too long.
I had to google Flatsy dolls but I instantly remembered them when I saw them!

One year for Christmas I got bathroom furniture for my Sindy doll. I didn't have a proper dolls house, I had a square board for the floor and two pieces of wood joined together to make four rooms. My dad used bits of leftover carpet to stick on the floor. Bathroom set was bath, toilet and sink, I loved it! I'm 57 but still remember that Christmas present.

I never had a new bike at Christmas, bikes were passed down to the next cousin, and I was the second youngest. Didn't bother me though, although I always wanted a Chopper, they looked so cool. Needless to say none of us ever got one!

Happy memories.

Bikes were always second hand for us too.

I did have a Raleigh chopper purchased second hand and tbh I didn't like the way it rode.

I had quite a lot of second hand presents...for my birthday I got the greengrocer's daughter's bike she'd grown out of, one year an absolutely amazing doll's house that one of my parent's friends had hand made for their daughter but she'd grown out of it, similarly a desk which actually had the girl's name painted on it, thankfully it was small so I just stuck a sticker over it!

One year (I was probably about 10) I asked for an electric train set, visualising an electrically powered steam loco at the front and a couple of coaches.

I don't think I could hide my disappointment when I opened an ELECTRIC train set. namely one based on the London Tube trains, so no steam loco after all :(

In my day, you had a new bike if and when you passed the 11-plus exam.

Before that, they were 2nd hand.

By the time I reached that age the 11 plus had been abolished. To be fair I'm pretty damned sure I'd have failed it and would've ended up at the comprehensive school I ended up going to anyway...although the name was changed to High school by then!

I missed my 11 plus because I had mumps, but I was already a pupil at an independent girls’ school so I’d have stayed there anyway.
