Why do some emeralds say origin N/A?

I wondered if anybody knows why many emeralds on gems web dont say the origin, just N/A ,, surely they must know where they have been sourced from?

It has always put me off ever getting any that say that.

Maybe this is the case for other gems but i have only noticed emerald say this.

I believe it's because it tells you in the title eg Brazilian Emerald or Colombian Emeralds. A presenter asked the same question the other day. Quite logical when you think about it.

Suzyglam, I have noticed that with a few emerald items I've been checking the stats on. Needless to say I just pass on by!

Scott has just answered this question, and first off thank you to Scott and others who are listening to us. It was too much for me to quote exactly but my understanding is that he has spoken to Richard Hughes and rather than enter information that may be incorrect the origins are marked as N/A. When the emeralds come in and are given over to the manufacturing side you may get back a piece of one origin or mixed and unfortunately by the time they have been finished and the card is prepared it is uncertain which rings have which origin of emerald, i.e. Zambia, Brazil or Colombia.

He says if anyone has any question about anything at all regarding Gems, to please e-mail him personally at [email protected] and he will answer directly or obtain the answer for you. xxx

PS - Did you hear the latest that historians now believe that the flag of St Andrew should in fact be red and white in the form of a + shape rather than the traditional x.

Was interested to read this question about origins. It seems rather daft that a valuable gem like emerald cannot have its source tracked throughout the manufacturing process. why not? I don't think I would be happy to buy anything without having a clear idea of its origin and also part of the fun and interest in collecting for me is this kind of detail.:thinking2:

Sorry, but it seems like a poor excuse. If Gems don't know where the Emeralds have come from, then I for one won't be buying an Emerald from N/A!!!!!

I have never heard anything so ludicrous in my life! How can they be pricing these items correctly if they don't know where the emerald has come from? Are they trying to say they would charge the same price for a Zambian emerald as they would for a Colombian emerald? Obviously they are paying peanuts and buying dross. Any decent gem trader would be stating exactly where their stones originated and not just saying "well they could have come from Africa, then again maybe it was South America or if the Yellow Diamond ring I had delivered the other day is anything to go by it's the nearest car boot sale!!

Just another point to consider............ at least they're not lying or putting just any old origin on the certificate and they've admitted they don't know. Ok, that's not great but hey, if the price is reasonable and not priced like a top class Colombian then I reckon it's best for them to be honest.
