How did he ever get a permanent place on QVC? Was he a good gardener in the past?

That can be said again.....just shows, how people with a bit of "know how" can make a packet out of it. He has done very well for himself, selling his garden products. QVC sells about 20 of his garden products.
He has got it made, after all , QVC has a huge viewing audience and he has no competition at all on QVC.
