'I find the ‘engagement’ phase a bit strange under the circumstances, a family celebration with the marriage ceremony being central is IMO all that is needed', I agree with you Silver Fox. Back in the 80s I had a fabulous colleague, she was an extremely kind, funny & attractive woman who had been widowed when young & then met her'chap' when she was in her fifties. They enjoyed life & always went shopping on Saturday morning followed by lunch. One weekend the shopping didn't happen because he'd arranged their wedding & celebration meal instead. It was May bank holiday & they went to Venice for the next two days. No fuss, just romantic & stylish - like them.
