Halogen Oven (again)

I didn't buy the oven last time after all. Another kitchen gadget failed on me so I had to replace that. How are the people who bought it last time getting on with it? The reviews on IW site mention the timer failing and I think I read that somewhere else as well. Someone said that they had to return it at their own expense and they didn't say whether they ever got it refunded by IW (+the original P&P). Are you all finding it gives good results and that it is quicker than a normal oven?

Think it may be quicker to go down the shop and buy one, Ideal World delivery is terrible.

I was also wondering about this oven as we've got a touring caravan and was thinking about it for then - so if anyone's got any reports I'd be really interested as well!!

BTW I ordered 2 items from Ideal World on Saturday and they arrived on Tuesday!!! We've never had a problem with IW deliveries.

I find Ideal World are OK on delivery times, it's when the orders are sent direct that it can take some time.

The problem is that no one holds stock anymore. IW pass the orders onto the company who is selling the item, then they wait and collated the orders then order from the distributor, distributor supplies the company then they ship it out to us. Hence the delay.

I have the old model of Halogen Oven with detachable lid, I wish this one was available with the hinged lid when I bought mine. Not had any problems and tend to use it every day now. One of the best buys I have made, but it is the older model.
They do need to provide a decent recipe book with them. For the first few weeks it can be a bit of hit or miss on the timings.

I don't have the one with the attached hinged lid, but the exact same one with the loose removeable lid which can be better if space is a problem. I got it from Coopers via Amazon (quicker delivery than direct from Coopers for some reason, and nectar points if you bother with this). It was £39.99 plus p&p which I don't remember but was not outrageous at about £5 or so. Amazon also have the Flavorwave and JML hinged ones.

Mine is behaving well and I wouldn't be without it. I had a similar one before which just died of old age. They are perfect for anyone with disabilities as they are so much easier to use than cookers. I've gone down with my head in one, many a time - lol.

I find that by following instructions for fan assisted ovens, and taking a few minutes off works, well for anything over 10/15 minutes. It is quicker than a big cooker and so easy to keep an eye on what's going on, leaving you with quality time for the family

The problem with Ideal World is that they should tell us the customer if its direct despatch from the supplier and then be honest and tell us a true date and give us a tracking number so we know what day its coming especially as we have to sign for it. the date on the internet account is different to the date heard on their automated service on the phone and then the date given by the customer service reps when you speak with them is different again. the lady says its 10 days delivery but its not true.

Anyway the halagon oven sounds like a good oven Themroc, glad you love yours., perhaps I will invest in one of those sometime but not from ideal World.

I had to return mine which was faulty(Electrically)
It was also IMHO unwieldy and lacking in instructions- no lovely tempting recipes came with this one! So I was glad to see the back of it. Ideal world collected it and refunded the full amount inc p+p.

I wonder if some of the products are of second rate quality? because I have had problems with other expensive items from IW such as a Computer sold as being Vista compatible- and was not! I had to buy a new graphics card and extra memory after having to return it to Cube computers under guarantee.
Also Tefal Actifry had to have 2 replacement parts, a new lid and a bowl. Plus problems with a laptop with a faulty battery and TV dongle that does not work properly.
IW just pass you over to the suppliers to deal with all of these problems when in fact I understand that they should be held resposible as retailers for all of these products?? apologies for the rant!http://www.shoppingtelly.com/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif

I love my halogen oven, I bought it a few weeks back when it was a 4 day deal.
I've used it almost everyday since, all I've done is tweaked the timings and temps of my usual recipes. I've found by keeping an eye on whatever's cooking and using common sense, i.e turning often and adjusting the temperature as needed, eveything has come out beautifully. Meat is moist, roast veg are squidgy in the centre and crunchy on the outer, roasters are to die for, cakes are light and well risen....pastries cook to perfection but first put a metal backing sheet on the rack and turn the oven on for about 3 minutes then place your pastry dish directly onto it, it cooks the bottom instead of it still being abit 'doughy'

I've been pleasantly surprised and have enjoyed experimenting and adapting recipes. I highly recommend it.

oooh almost forgot to mention, I've never had pork crackling like the halogen oven cooks it... crispy and far too moreish.
