Hair extensions

Im neither the age or have the desire to wear 'mermaid' extensions, so having seen Catherine with hair down to her waist got me thinking about the maintenance of these extensions.
Very few women on tv now have short styles and it's fashionable to choose to have navel length hair.
So, does anyone on here have experience of these long pieces ? Is it continuous weekly visits to hairdressers? Does the hair matt when you wash it yourself ? Do you sleep in them? And how much do they cost?
I lost a lot of hair last year and the bit I had left I pinned up with a false hair scrunchie, - cost £9.99 off Amazon and few people realised it wasn't my own hair. (my hair has now grown back).
Just wondering.

Not sure but I think there are 2 types, the glued in ones and the threaded/woven ones. One of the girls in the office were I worked had the glued in ones, I was on door duty as the other two removed her extensions. They used nail polish remover to soften the glue and took the extensions out.
I've just realised there are temporary clip ins I think as well.

The clip in one's they can take off and put back on themselves. I think they need a lot of practice to get it right and their own hair has to be long enough to blend in. The Black American BA's are stitched in. This is painful and expensive. It's bad for the hair roots, too. She seems to have it taken out and replaced every 8 weeks, or so. There's also a lace cap glued on wig. I believe Ophelia wears one. Then there are Ruth's individual strand extensions, and so on, and so on. Damn nuisance, all of them, imo.

I remember when America's Next Top Model was on, and I used to watch. One girl had really short hair and Tyra decided to get her a weave in the makeover. The girl was crying with the pain and just told to suck it up, then someone from the production team checked and the girl's scalp was being pulled so tight it was dangerous, they took the weave out.

You can get natural virgin hair usually from India and very expensive or synthetic much cheaper. Virgin hair is sold by poor families to get money for the family.

The hair extension thing makes me think back in history of the massive wigs they wore, which sometimes had mice or cockroaches living in them.

Well it's very much the fad now, with female newsreaders, presenters and reality wannabees all sporting the same look.

I had very long extensions glued in years ago. They weren't real hair but fibre and took half a day to put in and were hugely expensive. I could only wash my hair once a week and had to use this special fibre shampoo (which also cost a fortune. I had them in for a couple of months, then had them cut shorter (with special scissors) but they were a huge faff to look after so out they came. Extensions nowadays are probably much easier to care for.

With age my hair has got thinner but I couldn’t do with the faff of having extra bits of hair glued in.I makes me feel uncomfortable to even think about it, can’t even do with gel type nails. When I see people these days with the obviously thick fake lashes, slug type eyebrows and pumped up lips they look so much better au natural.Then again I am of a certain age and yes, confession,as a youngster I would never be parted from my false eyelashes!

Why do young women want to look like old trouts. With the huge black eye brows and lashes like a paint brush and those huge lips they look ridiculous to me. Natural beauty looks so much better.

I couldn’t be bothered with all the faff and cost of hair extensions and would look daft with pepper and salt hai on a 74 year old IMO. I’m probably in the minority but I can’t stand having long hair with it all over the show. Couldn’t be arsed with all the palaver and time to wash, dry and style. I keep mine just below earline and have it cut regularly every 6to 8 weeks to keep it neat and tidy. It take around 20 minutes to wash, condition dry and style my hair.

Maybe they're not naturally beautiful. So, anything that might help!

Precisely Batti, how long DOES it take to wash dry and style these long fake styles. Just watching Lizzie Cundy (I know) spout her nonsense on GBN and thinking she must spend most of her day at the hairdressers or in front of the mirror at home to achieve her "look". Yep, wait til she gets to 76 and see what her priorities are then ! Same with Vorderman McCall Holden and the rest.

I haven’t been to a hairdresser for decades. I’ve had long hair for years and my son used to trim it for me. However, having just lost over 3 and a half stone I decided to change my look so two weeks ago he cut it for me and it’s now shoulder length. He must have done a good job because a lot of people have commented on it.

I certainly couldn’t be bothered faffing about with hair extensions even if I still wanted long hair, but if I do I’ll just grow it again,

Last week I was on the bus and sitting across from me was a woman, late 20s or early 30s. She had her daughter with her who look about 11 at most. Both wearing heavy black 2 inch long false eyelashes.

I get shown quite a few reels on Facebook showing hair/wig toppers being fitted on women whose hair has got thin. They look really impressive and as my fine hair is even finer now I'm 71 I've been sorely tempted to try one, but don't know of anyone else who has one to ask what they think of them.

You reminded me of a book in school of the Georgian period and the woman had a long cane to reach and scratch her high wigged head and a mouse ran down her shoulder.

Actually, one of my neighbours at the caravan (must have been in her 60s as she'd just retired) had really thin hair and then the next season when I saw her she'd had these hair extensions (not long ones) put in and it transformed her. You couldn't tell it wasn't her real hair and it took years off her. If my hair was really thinning I would definitely consider having that done.

I’m the same age with the same problem, I often wonder if those toppers are any good.
