Foundation, concealer and primer...

Receiving QVC's e mail about the Laura Geller TSV has resurrected (sorry, unintended pun on Easter Sunday) my quest for the perfect face make-up.

The trouble is my nose. It's large, quite oily with a few thread veins and visible pores - they're not over large but they seem to fill up with whatever makeup I try whilst it doesn't "stick" to the rest of the nose. When made-up my nose resembles either dimpled orange peel or a strawberry with those seeds.

So I'm looking for advice on effective foundations, primers and concealers - it doesn't have to be all 3, any combo. I don't really need full coverage on the rest of my face.

I should be really grateful. I'm conscious of being 54 and struggling to "look good for my age".

im sure you do look good for your age erics mum, i use smashbox primer light its great for oily bits as its more matte than the normal one, that may help with your nose

Sometimes you have to just give up on a quest. I've tried loads of things to cover up red cheeks and nose, including broken veins. Lots of stuff appears to do the job but after an hour or so the redness shows through again. I've given up trying new products now as my expectations are low.

i have tried loads of primers and the 2 i find best are laura gellars spakle and smashboxs primer.

the email says the laura gella products are chocolate scented??? there is an eyeshadow, lipgloss, lipliner or eyeliner - can't make it out, balance and brighten, and a blusher, all in shades of brown.

Hi there

I use Estee Lauders refinishing cream, great for open pores and it's a fab primer, better than any of the stuff QVC are selling, I've tried them all!

I wonder if you popped in to a large dept store they'd give you a sample?

Just a thought, have you tried dermablend foundation, I believe it covers most things?

The best primer I have ever used (and I'm on my third jar) is Ideal's Perfekt Teint from M.Asam. On the demos they claim it erases lines and wrinkles. It doesn't but it does put them into soft focus. BUT, it is totally brilliant at covering open pores - you only need a small amount - and makeup just glides over it. It does have a strong fruity smell and silicone feel so it's not everyone's cup of tea but it does a fantastic job, lasts for ages and I can't imagine being without it now. They also do a foundation called Magic Finish which I haven't tried but would be interested to hear views from anyone who has...:up::up::up:

I like Clarins, sorry I can't recall what its name is, little red pot, last ages and makes my skin look very smoooth, on top of that I use Olay "Touch of Foundation". both products are very light so shouldn't sit in pores but do even out the skin.

I like the Clarins one in the red pot and Smashbox primer light. I find that Feeze 24/7 does nothing for my wrinkles but it is a super primer on the pores in my nose!

I too have open pores on my nose and oily skin, and struggled for ages with LG b'n'b. I have tried loads of primers, Spackle did nothing for me at all. The best was Philosophy Supernatural. However, I stopped using it for a while, no reason, just wanted to try without it. Just used my b'n'b on top of my Elemis PCMC and it has done wonders! No more oily skin, the b'n'b looks fab and my pores are ok too. So for me, no more primer, along with no more toner - I must be Ms Young's worst nightmare!!

However, I do think that using oils on my face has reduced my pore size. I either use jojoba, sweet almond or olive. If you Google 'oil cleansing method' there are some surprising claims that make sense and really do work for oily and problem skin

I'm another oily skinned open pored person :sad:

I find Mally primer very good, I apply it over make-up and use her poreless loose powder as well, which is great for keeping the dreaded 'shinies' at bay :up:

I use L&G B&B but I put it on with a sponge and sort of press it in if that makes sense? I find the same thing with all foundations, unless I use a sponge or foundation brush (Smashbox do a fab one) and really 'work' it in, then they will sit on the skin and make pores worse rather than covering them up.

Skin care wise I have given up on both QVC and high street ranges, and am now having some specialist re-surfacing facials with a cosmetic dermatologist. Pricey, but when I think of all the money I've wasted on products that don't work, I'm hoping it will be worth it!:thinking:

I had pores like potholes all over my cheeks, nose etc for ages. I've found a combination of mineral make up (I currently use Lily Lolo foundation and sometimes Elemental Beauty too) and also Rosehip Oil has helped my skin enormously. The rosehip oil has really curbed my oily skin, breakouts and also really minimised the pores - my skin is by no means perfect, but I don't look like a doily anymore...

I was watching Embarrassing Bodies the other day - one of my guilty pleasures - and there was a lady in her fifties with quite a lot of broken veins on her cheeks and around her nose. They were pretty awful and I'm sure yours are nowhere near as bad, but because they were bothering her she was packed off to this surgeon, Brian Newman, who has a new technique which zaps them. I watched while he just passed a pen around them and snapped them. It didn't hurt and afterwards, she was a new woman. It was absolutely fantastic. You can google him and he operates in Harley St and in other places. I have had a couple of thread veins zapped from around my nose. It was about the best £60 I ever spent. Good luck.

Smashbox Hi Def Concealer is the best concealer I have ever tried. It covers anything. It is only a small tube but you need a very small amount and it lasts ages.

I saw it but did not catch the surgeon's name or whereabouts so thanks for the info. I had something a bit more basic done a few years ago but they came back within a couple of months. I will definitely follow this up.

thanks to you all for such useful replies. I'm going to start with the oil as I just happen to have some Akin rosehip oil in my beauty stash. I'm also going to follow up the laser-zapping of the veins (will it be more painful on my credit card than on my nose ?). I'm also going to pop into Debenhams and see if I can get samples of high-coverage foundations.

I feel a bit better now. Silly to get down about a nose, but I've been ill for some time and things have got on top of me! Spring heralds my "new year new me".

Please please be careful about the lasering of the veins. I had it done and one minor mistake was like being jet propelled through the gates of pain city and the damage to my skin seems permanent. When it works it's great but please insist on them being cautious. The technique rosielinks mentioned seems cool.
