I sympathise with anyone who has sensitive skin. I didn't have it for long but it nearly drove me round the pipe. After it started to settle I was able to use Bare Minerals but only with a synthetic brush. The natural brushes made my skin itch like bejaysus. Initially I thought it was the makeup. I can't remember why I swapped brushes but it stopped the irritation straight away and now I only use synthetic brushes. Does the job with no aggravation.

How about an NHS prescribed product, eg 500g pump tube of DIPROBASE will last ages. You will be able to get it free if you qualify for free scrips, otherwise I think scrips are about £7-50 now. Or £8 + PP from t'interweb.

My husband was prescribed Diprobase for eczema on his face and has found it very drying ..he`ll use that because the GP said use it but being `old fashioned` won`t try anything I suggest..I wanted him to try LE but he wasn`t having any of it.....he`s using Germolene (his choice) at night now which he says is having more of an effect than the Diprobase which comes in a massive pump action bottle

Germolene has Phenol in (carbolic acid) Mad, try and get him to listen to you. Been there with my ex who took everybody else's advice but mine!

OH sometimes suffers from really bad spots and bad skin (in his 40ies) and when we first started going out this bottle of Clearasil kept on appearing at my sink - didn't matter what else I suggested, he bought that stuff and all lectures about it being way too harsh didn't do any good. He only stopped it when I constantly complained about him smelling of detergent whenever he came near.

Try and get your OH off the germolene if you can! (good luck...)

Burlz, I hope your skin feels better soon.

Ooo yes, it was bright pink too with a fancy tube with green scrolling on it and red writing I think.

I have to add my two penneth here too. I've had allergies most of my life, respiratory disease too, I take loads of meds am under the north west lung centre and from Jan 2012 due to numerous allergic reactions causing skin flare ups and angiodema (massive lip swelling) under a consultant allergist too.

Part of these problems have seen me develop eczema last Oct following another flare up, this has subsequently spread from my face and hairline to affect my hands badly too. I now know that my awfully dry body skin that I've had all of my life is eczema too, no wonder it’s been a b*gger to keep moisturised!

I've had steroids for the angiodema causing peri oral dermatitis which is very nasty a sort of acne come eczema, then stopped the steroids, had anti biotics, gone onto steroid cream for my forehead problems and then back to a peri oral dermatitis reaction and more recently a high dose course of anti biotics for infections on my hands due to the skin being so sore, cracked and open.

I've had another peri oral derm flare up this week and am now refusing to use steroid cream. My Gp wants me to use it and I have a course of another lot of long term anti biotics along and some awful ooky creams.

My views so far:
Dermol 500 lotion, a light lotion and good for cleansing for not very moisturising if used for that too. Epaderm and hydromol ointments are both very similar paraffin type bases and make my skin even more sore and red, as OP says they provide a barrier but don't cure the problem and cause loads of spots!!

Synalar and hydrocortisone, effective at providing a short term solution to flare ups but cause kick back reactions in some like me with the peri oral derm.

Lanolin, including the famous ozzie brand currently being sold (can't recall the name) I'm allergic
Weleda's almond soothing - allergic reaction big time to what I thought would be the answer. Looks like my skin hates sweet almond oil.
Hemp oil reputed to be great for dry skin and eczema, possibly caused my latest reaction.

I literally feel like i can't use anything on my skin.

I can't tell you how many things I've tried but I agree with another OP - if your skin is truly compromised don't use ranges like Liz Earle with essential oils in as what you have isn't really a cosmetic but a more medical problem.

Every brand I’ve tried for sensitive reactive allergic skin I can find online and in shops and believe me the list is mahoosive have been unsuitable.

What I am trying now and so far I like is something called Hope's relief cream. It’s widely available here and I bought mine yesterday from the 8th day vege shop on Oxford Road. It’s only been about 12 hours and two applications in so it might all go horribly wrong but it does seem to have had an immediate effect on the dryness, soreness and burning feeling I was having, its reduced some of the clown like redness around my lips too.

I quite like the sound of double base but it contains something called isopropyl myristate or something which is a non no for me too.

Lady Tia you poor thing! I'm not actually reccommending you do this but a few years back there was a documentary on TV about Eczema which I have but its pretty much dormant now). The girl featured had the worst Eczema I have ever seen. She tried disgusting tasting Chinese Herbs. Her Eczema cleared up. I was absolutely amazed.

You could have over- sensitized skin due to trying so many products one after the other. You could switch ti just aqueous cream from the chemist for a while, give your skin a rest then reintroduce things one at a time. Thats what I did and I can use Liz Earle/ Emma Hardie now and most make up QVC sell.

Lady Tia,I know someone who has had good results with that Hope's relief cream you are trying out so with a bit of luck it might help you. Last year I fell into the trap of trying too many so called anti aging products, different brands from qvc and high street. After a few months of this my skin didn't know what was going on and was literally screaming for help,it was dry, sore and looked and felt awful.I decided to go back to the one range I like and trust, Elemis, pcmc and oxy night cream. My skin has recovered and I will be sticking with them, just goes to show that chopping and changing all the time is not such a good idea. I read an article a while back in Red magazine that said facialists and dermatolagists were seeing more and more clients with skin problems due to overuse of too many anti aging products, they recommended a return to simpler, more natural products. Hope all of you experiencing skin problems feel better soon.

Thanks everyone but he`s a stuborn as a mule and as the Germolene has had a better result than the Diprobase he`s not for changing ..he puts a clean hand towel over his pillow every night so thats not too bad but I can`t say that for the smell!!

Hi Kat73 thanks you for your reply and advice - its very much appreciated.

I have been recommended a supplement called aller-DMG which contains chinese herbs and is repeat purchased by some customers at an online retialer. I am considering that but its quite expensive.

I have tried to use any skincare range for at least two weeks so that i'm not changing all the time but when i've started to react and carried on using it i think i've made my skin worse by trying to persevere.

My skin problems are all health and medication related I think ultimately, these and allergies impact on my skin's health so i think my skin will never be in a non-reactive state its just keeping it calm.

Its good to hear you were able to get your skin to a calmer place and able to move back to some of the lovely to use ranges. Thanks again :)

Hi China Girl - thank you, I totally agree about anti-ageing, I was advised never to use anti-ageing creams etc on my skin as they are usually too stimulating for a skin that reacts. Its the temptation though isn't it, especially watching QVC but I've resisted using only natural oils (such as hemp, jojoba, calendula, argan or EVOO) with no essntial oils, mineral oils etc but still reacted arghhhhh. I agree with you and Kat73 though changing products a lot can't help. I think along with people just being prone to skin problems pollution, food etc doesn't help.

I'm glad you have found something you can use and be happy with.

Ooo for pet allergy sufferers too (as I am) I've bought something called petal cleanse (sounds a bit funny when I say it!) but its basically a liquid you rub over your cat (dog etc) and then dry them off, its meant to prevent the dander that contains all the scary symptom causing allergens from flying around and attacking poor unsuspecting allergy sufferers, its got great reviews on amazon etc. so i'm hoping that might help too.

Its always good to hear about someone's good experience with something to glad to hear hope's relief cream has given success to someone you know and so far, I'm at about 40 hours in from starting to use it, its absolutely amazing, my peri oral dermatitis is really calming down , my horrible swollen eczema is not looking so cracked, red or angry so here's hoping it'll work, if it does as its actually quite nice to use i'll be sticking with it :)
