My estate has a giveaway of unwanted items every Friday (Freebie Friday) for residents.

Today I acquired a Hansells yogurt maker and about 40 sachets to go with it. They are 4 1/2 years out of date, but the worst that will happen is that it may not set.

I've just started a batch of Greek style with real coconut.

These are all made in NZ, and funnily enough Easiyo comes from OZ. I wonder why they have to be shipped from so far away, is yogurt very popular down under?

I prefer the design of the Hansells machine as it uses a LnL style container which doesn't leak when you shake it.

I'm interested to see how it turns out tomorrow :)
I’m interested in how you get on with the out of date sachets too, as I have a few out of date Hansells sachets too 😁 They’re about two years out of date and I was about to throw them away. My yoghurt maker is Hansells too and I’ve only ever used their yogurt but I think they may have closed down so I’ll probably be using Easiyo in future. Good luck with it 🙂

It was perfectly OK, very thick, creamy and delicious, better than any Easiyo sachets I've used.

That’s great, thankyou 🙂 Really glad I didn’t throw those out of date sachets away. I agree, Hansells yogurt is creamy and delicious but I can’t compare with Easiyo as I’ve not tried it. I do think Hansells may have closed down though - they had a closing down sale a few months ago.

I think it will be fine.

I thought I'd give you an update on my easiyo prowess. I have got it down to a fine art and I can have it prepped in a matter of minutes, however after eating a kilo of yoghurt a week since I bought the thing - I'm getting a bit bored with it. I was thrilled with the first batch I made which was the vanilla sachet that came with the machine, the rhubarb was delicious and zingy and I pretty much like all the other flavours I made up apart from that is the chocolate dessert style ones that I found claggy and fairly tasteless. I mentioned earlier that I stocked up on a whole plethora of different flavours and I've got enough to last me for months if I carry on making it on a weekly basis. I've been finding that it's all getting a bit "samey" - thick yoghurt with a fairly vague flavour of this and that. The positives are that I know they're good for you and the other thing is that the sachets have very long dates on them, therefore if I give 'em a break for a while they're not gonna go off. I have to say that I'm missing having yoghurts with chunks of fruit in them even though I know there's nothing stopping me adding fruit to these. I guess once I've tried a few more I'll decide which ones I'd buy again which so far has been the rhubarb and the vanilla, sadly I've not got a sachet of plain, which of course would be a lot more versatile, so I'll probably invest in a some sachets. I don't regret buying it at all as it's a brilliant gadget, but the novelty is wearing off!

I eat a kilo a DAY and have been doing so since they first appeared on QVC many years ago. I just love it (plain).

I haven't bought sachets since then, I make my own from the previous batch (there are loads of previous posts about this). The only cost is a litre of milk and some hot water.

I can’t imagine ever getting bored of Easyio but maybe it’s because, having tried a lot of the different flavours, I now only buy the ones that I really like. I sometimes buy them in bundles, when QVC are cheaper than elsewhere, or I buy them direct from Easyio. I steer clear of the natural ones though.

They’re mixed and ready to put into the yoghurt maker well before the kettle’s finished boiling so it’s made in a few minutes. I like them for many reasons ….. the fact that they’re probiotic, they’re easy to make, they’re cheaper overall than buying tubs from a supermarket and the shelf life on each packet is very good. I also never buy milk because I don’t like it although, illogically, I didn’t mind eating Activia yoghurt. However, I prefer Easyio because it’s less “acidic” tasting than shop bought yoghurts.

I used to just dollop huge unmeasured portions into a bowl but, since starting healthier eating in January 2024, I have now reduced the “dollops” and only have between 100g - 200g a day, usually a couple of hours before I go to bed.

It's not about the money even though I'd say a 7 litres of milk a week isn't that cheap but obvs a lot cheaper for someone who consumes that amount of yoghurt. I used to have a yoghurt maker that you needed to save a scoop of the last batch to make the next but it meant I had to keep it on the go constantly and the unit was pretty damn bulky - good to know that you can do that in an easiyo machine though.

A litre of UHT milk is currently 69P, which I'm sure is much cheaper than an Easiyo sachet. And I love the flavour, it's much better than the flavour of the original plain Easiyo that started it all off many years ago,

Apart from the Hansell sachets I got for free (see above) I have been experimenting with putting flavoured protein powder into my yogurt, but I still prefer the plain, and once my protein powder is used up I won't buy any more. I only use 10g so it will take a while to use the 500g bag. It is also very difficult to mix in.

Agree Merry, I rarely make Easyiyo these days. Much prefer Greek 10% plain yogurt. Only eat it at breakfast. Last one I made was Cappuccino and ended up throwing down the sink! Why not use the plain folded through with a fruit puree and frozen, or in sauces, or dressings, or even in baking? I used to have a really good Easiyo cook book, try going on their website for ideas.

I used to love the Easiyo coconut with bits one but now I find it can taste very bland, almost floury. I definitely find, like Merryone, I get sick of Easiyo after a few batches so I have to have a break from it. Some of the flavours also have too much sugar but I don’t eat that much at a time so it’s not a huge problem (and it’s better than consuming a whole tub of ice-cream which I have been known to do!).

I first saw and bought Easiyo from QVC in about 2010 and a sachet to make a litre worked out under £2 (about £1.80) including P&P. Within three or four years, it was closer to £2.50, then you were lucky to find a deal where it worked out under £3. Currently, the best deals on the site make it £3.30. I am not paying that especially as I am having regular problems with it not setting so I just end up with flavoured milk. I usually stock up with a few multipacks from Lakeland online when they have it on offer on the site or they send me a discount code so it is nicely under £3 a sachet but am buying/making less and less.

I think my biggest thing is that when you buy a flavoured yoghurt in a shop it has chunks of the fruit in it, it's not just a smooth yoghurt that tastes like the flavour on the packet and I miss that. I did chop up some banana into the banana yoghurt and that was nice, but i can't be buying every single fruit to compliment every single flavour. The vanilla is fine and the rhubarb one was just delicious, but sometimes a flavour isn't quite enough even if the flavourings are natural. It's so easy to make so I'll probably not bother taking a break, but once I'm through with the supply I've got I'm gonna keep it to the natural and pick out my favourite flavours. I won't be spending any more money on mixed multipacks.
