Diet Chef - really????

Diet Chef is one of my most hated items. It's the ultimate in totally abrogating responsibility for your own health and instead, giving a load of modern charlatans a license to 'monetise' you for all your worth. Diet Chef does nothing to re-educate people's eating habits so they can not only achieve but maintain a healthy weight. Rather, it's cleverly designed to trap you into being on 'the programme' for the rest of your life' - as soon as you stop doing it, you're bound to put weight back on because nothing fundamentally has changed. So, of course, you're going to keep buying it. Add in the fact that it tastes like sh** and you've got a wonder of a modern product, ideal for QVC's auto-delivery system. I might approach QVC's buying department to see if they'd be interested in my new wonder product. Known to The Ancients, it's a cleverly-designed cellular respiration solution made of the worlds finest nitrogen, with an added 21% oxygen boost and essential trace gasses. Supplied in handy 4mL vials, this product is sure to make you feel alive and ready for the day's challenges...

To be fair, people who have never had a weight problem and those who have lost weight (and are a wee bit like reformed smokers) can't appreciate that it IS very hard to loose weight. I eat very small portions and lots of fruit, raw veg and fish yet I struggle to keep weight off. I walk every morning before work but there us no way a gym or work out is ever going to fit into my life. There are times when I just wonder if it is worth it.
One of my grans was ginormous, the other was a beanpole, guess which one I take after!

I can understand why people are sucked in to this type of thing - desperation makes us make bad decisions.

Desperation makes the greedy corporations for slimming,....rich rich rich ....we lose pounds .....money pounds ...they gain loads ...the winners through and through .... The Winner Takes It All ....money money money must be funny ....as the songs go...

Same as the skin care regimes ....cart load of rubbish inmho ....for makeing people look younger....rubbish rubbish rubbish .....people are taken to the cleaner so many times it's almost criminal ....:mysmilie_503::headbang:

Spot on there.

The plan I have been on has completely revolutionised my eating habits. I understand portion size and now I am working towards weaning myself onto supermarket alternatives to the meals. It is not a wonder product but proper food sent to you in conveniently portiond meals. For those willing and able to pay it offers convenience and I have no problem paying for a service...

being overweight/obese is a major issue for me and millions of people worlwide. personally i believe genetics play a major part in wieght. sometimes its depression some people eat out of comfort rather than what they need. i agree that up to a point companies do make money on this modern problem of overeating to excess. meal plan like diet chef/jane plan and others are quite new. they address the fact that shopping and buying treats is a major problem for some people. having your meals delivered can help them. being able to have your main meal in a few minutes is a bonus. buying fresh veg/fruit/low fat milk is very cheap very few pounds a week. i cant see a problem costwise diet chef with qvc is £4-5 a day or even less. jane plan looks more specialised so cost a bit more. its something people can consider.

i suspect people that have a problem with over eating will always have a problem that may have to be addressed with therapy. diet programmes are aids that can support you but its down to you in the end.

Thank youMay for the most sensible post on this subject. I wish people especially women would relalise that these expensive products are just rubbish. If people think that diet chef is going to be the answer they obviously know they have to control their eating so why not seek help from the medical profession for advice about diet etc. and save money at the same time. I also agree about 'miracle 'beauty products they are just a load of rubbish and I don't know how these companies are allowed to get away with some of the claims they make.

Thank you Bettyboo ...I agree about getting medical professional help .... Totally ...".Margery Daws" is the last person people need for helping there self esteem ....( I know she is an exaggerated form of the slimming club reps ...but so near to how the come across and are trained to i suppose) ...

Totally agree about these diet companies. I'm a work in progress on slimming (see my earlier post with my top tips that work for me) but ultimately, the solution is easier to say than to do. Eat smaller portions and do more. Not everyone can physically do more, and not everyone wants to eat smaller portions and I sympathise with people under stress who need to eat to help themselves through whatever. Been there, done that. But these charlatans are con artists, pure and simple. Unless the loads of money you spend gets you into the habit of eating smaller portions, they're a waste of time and money and the weight will come back unless you've got into proper eating habits and do more. Avoid like the plague, I'd say. They're no panacaea.

I agree that people may need professional medical and psychological support with their weight issues but they may also need practical help. Research has shown that meal planning and recording what you eat can be effective in supporting weight loss and maintenance and I think that is where these types of plans can be useful.

Does this make people more obsessed though? .....and does it cause more guilt ? ..".oh ...I've eaten a chocolate ...I need to write this down" .does this stop people from eating more? ....I don't think so personally .....if a person gets a great chocolate buzz ....nothing will stop them just because they have written it down in my humble opinion ....if that was the case ...obesity would be solved ....i really believe bereavement and any stress....depression will make a person eat in a brain fog ....nutrition is one thing that I rNk could possibly help ....get the emphasis off of weight loss....get the focus on nutrition and health ....and not the aim to look like a model or posh spice ....but to avoid being obese ...even if a little plumper than you want to be ....eating plans could cause a perfection crisis maybe .....there are so many foods that can give our brains the feel good factor we need to help reduce cravings ...( won't necessarily stop them but it's going in the right direction...)....for example bananas or cottage cheese release a chemical called tryptophan in the brain which also helps with the feel good chemical seratonin in the brain ( choccy releases that too but it's short lived etc) ...and turkey ....i want to say to a person who is. Unhappy with their weight it's not their fault ....but they can get help away from the traditional methods that So many turn to and don't succeed....it takes time ...it's not an over. It's not an overnight thing to be able to change your diet to a healthier one but it can be done ....I have a distinction now in diet and nutrition advisor ...i so want to help people but I don't want to rip them off....I want to see them happy again ....and healthier ....not sure how to go about it but ...I'm keen for sure ....

To be honest I'm happy to give advice for free at the moment ......i need to practice of course ...and provide the correct advice on paper etc ...advice from doctor first before taking any advice from a nutrition adviser ....I got my qualification from stone-bridge college on line ...took me ten months but loved it ....I learned about vitamin C and how important it is to keep us healthy ...I was hardly eating any at all ...i pretty much eat an orange most nights ...but I like my choccy too ...:0)
I've learned so much and a few bits frightened me into eating healthier .not because of vanity ...because of health ...I don't want to be part of the health police ...that's not my interest ...I want to give people hope again ....sorry I will, stop rattling on ....i really go along with the nourishment not punishment attitude :0)

I think it's great that you're so interested in Nutrition that you've educated yourself on it, but I must from a professional point of view point out that the only people medically qualified to give advice on diet and nutrition are Registered Dieticians, who are fully registered with the HPCP (the Health and Care Professions Council). As well as an intensive 4-year undergraduate degree, dieticians are required to complete placements in a variety of healthcare settings and are bound by professional standards upheld by the relevant statutory authority. I would urge you, if you are truly interested in helping people to improve their health by making healthy food choices to consider a career in it. Unfortunately, Nutritionists, diet counsellors and the like are not sufficiently trained, nor regulated in any way and though usually perfectly well-intentioned, are not qualified to give accurate medically-informed advice led by the latest scientific research. If you're interested in dietetics, might I point out this link:

https://www.bda.uk.com/about/about_bda/dietitians

I'm not trying to be snotty or anything about this, but I do believe it is important to make sure people who are in need of help know exactly to whom they should turn for the best care and advice and we are all bloody lucky that the NHS provides a Dietetic Service.

As someone who has lost nearly 4 stone over the last 2 years, here are my tips for dieting. I have never used any special diet food as I don't see the point of it, plus I want to control what I eat.

Firstly you have to be mentally strong. Sort out the things that would send you running off to comfort eat.

Write everything down that you eat. I use a website called my fitness pal - http://www.myfitnesspal.com/. It works out your calorie intact etc. I use this only to record my daily intake and exercise.

Porridge for breakfast. I get up and eat breakfast early (5am) and often found that by 10.30 - 11.00 I was hungry. But having a small bowl of porridge with a little bit of diet sugar and a small sliced apple on the top keeps me going until way after lunchtime if I am very busy.

No processed food - I want to know exactly what I am eating and use a slightly smaller plate to eat from.

If sweets and chocolate are your weakness then never walk down that aisle in the supermarket until you are stronger. Now I have made a pact with myself. If there is no one in the sweet aisle, then I may treat myself to something or as a test I walk down it looking at all of the sweets and don't pick any up.

Don't expect to lose weight too quickly as it will come back quickly. Get some very accurate electronic scales that register even 100g lost and be happy for even a small weight loss each week as long as its a loss. If you gain a little then don't beat yourself up about it. Its hard enough without adding guilt.

Lastly to deal with cravings I go and clean my teeth as the taste of fresh toothpaste seems to dispel them.

I don't want to be a diet bore, but if anyone wants any more tips, then please feel free to PM me.

One last theory of mine is that the supermarkets don't help with weight gain. If you are a sweet/chocolate lover, you can't buy just one thing anymore. Its all 6 packs or family packs. Hence another reason I avoid the sweet aisle in the supermarket.

The 5:2 diet is fantastic. I've even got OH on it now. His BMI is 30 (as per health check at Sainsburys yesterday). It was 32 so he is slowly going down. I'm happily maintaining at a BMI of 22.5. There is a Facebook group called 'the5:2diet' which is very supportive. People have lost 4 stone on it. People post their before and after photos. Lots of success stories. It is a closed group so you have to ask to join. The 5:2 was publicised by a Horizon programme.

I've maintained a healthy weight by not concentrating on it but concentrating on how food can me feel ....for examples know for definate that if as have a bar of chocolate it makes me feel abit drained ...and if i have more than that ...I cannot sleep properly ....it wakes me up ...sugar caffeine ....and processedfoodswith E numbers and such have th same affect ....and also I keep well away from fizzy drink ....I hate hate how they make me feel ...lovedrinkingthem ....but not as much as I know I will feel moody ...even one glass of Diet can do this ....and reading up so much about caffeine ...it stresses your adrenal glands and makes you crave rubbish food ...my son gave me some fizzy ginger beer the other day bless him...but the bottle is still full ...I had a few sips and that was my lot....it takes a while to sort this and writing foods down that make you feel drained ...tired ...moody .down, ..headachecy etc is something I prefer than dieting .....that's why I took a nutriton course ....i eat burgers and junk with the best of us ....but I just take note on how it makes me feel compared to a healthy low fruit smoothly ...with greenery ....it tastes fab and give me energy ....but I also want my chocolate ....i won't deny myself totally ...sends a process of obsessional thoughts ..can't have can't have can't have ...must have must have ....oh dear ...i eating it guilt guilt guilt ...and so on .....and I take supplements that I obtain though speacial offers etc ....this can can certainly edge off....I'm lucky I'm. It bothered about cake ...if somebody gave me a choccy eclair with the cream oozing out ...I would eat it ...( maybe share with hubby if I don't have pms ):mysmilie_17:....but I don't feel compelled to buy one ....I can walk past a chip shop now ....espeacially if I make sure I'm not Hungry before info out....but it's not always hunger that sets eating off....I want to say to any lady who is desperate ....please please do not punish yourself ...eat to enjoy and nourish yourself ....I love my oranges in the evening ...the big juicy gorgeous ones....sweet ones ....but sometimes ...I want some choccy ...try try to forget about your weight as such ...don't make it the main focus ...and if you need help with any upsets ...get help ....I think if I hadn't had counselling during all my bereavments I might have eaten more than I did ....selfies selfies selfies ....everywhere ...washboard stomachs ...it seriously is enough to make you attack the cream cakes .....pressure from everywhere ...even little girls have been reported to be dieting ....fruit, veg and a healthy lovely sandwich but not a lettuce leaf with lowfat dressing ....or red days blue days green days ...starving days .eat what you want days .....in my humble opinion eat to prevent that heart attack ...diabetes...cancer ..gall stones ...strokes ...and then the weight should look after itself .....

I agree with you May, different foods can make you feel differently. Luckily for me I have never liked junk food and have never eaten it. In the UK I did like and eat chocolate daily but in France the cocoa percentage is higher in chocolate and I would only have to have one small square and the following morning I would have a migraine. So I gradually weaned myself off it.

Luckily when it is hot here, you don't feel like eating filling foods, so that helps as well. I am now at the stage that if I don't eat healthily then I feel sluggish and 80% rather than 100%.
