Flicked on to see that the graphics are not longer 4:3 safe and are optimised for 16:9 viewing.

Can't praise QVC enough on this one, they're one of the few TV channels with enough guts to do it. Surprise surprise people are whining on the Facebook page (despite 16:9 CRTs being literally 99p to buy on eBay!).

I personally think its a good thing and improves viewing.. I always wondered when they'd do it. It probably also has something to do with bridging the gap to their eventual HD graphics for when they broadcast in HD.

For the sake of a few people moaning.. I think it was well worth it.
I mean, channels in the UK started broadcasting in 16:9 over 10 years ago, and only now we're geting to see some of the benefits of it regarding space for graphics.

Well done Q :)

i hate it makes the details too bunched up,

my mums 28" CRT is fine but the details looked so squashed and its even worse on my 21" CRT as its cutting a lot of the details off and thats with messing around with the settings

I honestly hadn't noticed the difference until they pointed it out on air. I'm not all that fussed about the screen format to be honest, it all looks s**te on my dinky little portable telly anyway!

wondered why the details had been half cut off on my tv thjeir all shifted to the left and can't make out what they are stupid q do i have to adjust the screen setting on my tv?

If you have a widescreen tv and the graphics are falling off the edge still, if you can turn off overscan as that will help :)

I do understand that there are still 4:3 sets out there but as the percentage falls lower and lower they do have to think of the majority more who do have 16:9 sets. I wonder if 50 years from now 21:9 or 2:35:1 as it can be called will be the standard. There are the odd tv's coming out with that ratio.

I wondered why the details had disappeared off to the left. I've altered it, but it makes everyone seem much taller and thinner now!

just altered the screen settings on my sky box all sorted but still not sure i like it it's like those mirrors you have in funfairs when you look squished in rather than outwards

These are the 3 ways the picture should be set up:

On a 4:3 TV (with letterbox setting)

On a 16:9 TV (Zoomed, overscan on)
<a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=124yq12" target="_blank"><img src="http://i42.tinypic.com/124yq12.png" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>

On a 16:9 TV (Overscan off, 1:1)
<a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=25umjxc" target="_blank"><img src="http://i41.tinypic.com/25umjxc.png" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>

Note: Some TVs you can't turn the overscan off, particularly earlier HDTVs and some CRT TVs.
No stretching should occur at any point.
The black bars at the side aren't a mistake, and are there for certain complicated reasons due to digital broadcasting!

Hope this helps :)

in my bedroom i have a crt and a digi box and i like the new format. if i use my virgin box i cant see the prices and info in the box...

Every new TV is now 16:9 format and the majority of main TVs in use are 16:9 so they had to change eventually.

I cant see the details on screen now. The box is too far to the left...

Oh, I am so glad I came on here! thought it was my tv. been fiddling with it for ages. what do you have to do to be able to see all of the L please? thanks for any help.
