£35 for a box of brownies

All the "handmade/homemade" food Q sell is totally overpriced, and not only that I think if you're ordering online from somewhere miles and miles away from your home, it takes the edge right off. Fgs, have a go at making your own, but lets face it, we all know someone who makes brilliant brownies and would probably knock you up a tray for next to nothing. NOBODY needs to spend this ridiculous amount of money - I couldn't give a $hit if they're made in a farmhouse in Wales or in an artisan bakery in the London docklands - That's too much to pay!

There were mince pies on the other day at around £5 a pie once you'd added in the postage. The co-op sell their premium brandy ones for less than a pound for 6 and I make my own (with a lot more brandy than the co-op) for next to nothing. I sometimes even make my own pastry and they turn out delicious.

More fool anyone who pays that price for 12 brownies. They look very decorative but they're one of the easiest cakes to bake - I have a recipe that works every time & can easily be adapted. I love cake, however, in a world where the distribution of basic food is arbitrary paying nearly £3 for something so unnecessary bothers me. They also contain palm oil which is totally wrong IMO.

I bought a hundred boxes.
I bought one hundred and one boxes !!

Nothing like home made.

I also think that these brownies are a classic example of "Gilding the Lily" or "over egging the pudding". A well made brownie is delicious in its simplicity and I can't see that a heap of sickly toppings are going to be an improvement - My teeth were literally itching watching that demonstration! A friend of ours who owns a cafe makes brownies to sell and they're gorgeous, she makes two types "classic" and one with a little bit of salted caramel swirled though...and that works! and what's more she charges about £1.50 for them. Like I said before, have a go yourself, Twilight has said they're pretty easy, get a mate to knock some up for you, or at least buy local. Looking for food gifts? All I can say is steer clear of QVC!

When QVC first aired I used to buy a lot but now its not really for everyday folk. The prices specially for food items are very high.
I don't know who they're trying to attract these days - The lazy rich perhaps - it certainly isn't "everyfolk" who are looking for good ideas, or something a little different from what the highstreet or other online retailers have to offer. They're so far up their own arses these days!

Double or Triple Chocolate Brownies

175g unsalted butter
250g dark chocolate
250g caster sugar
3 eggs
1tsp vanilla extract
150g plain flour
150g pecans or walnuts - toasted & roughly chopped*
200g chocolate chips or roughly chopped chocolate
* I don't like nuts so use more chocolate, usually half dark, half milk...

Oven - 180c/fan160c/gas 4
30cm x 20cm tin lined with baking parchment
Cook for max of 35 minutes, I often take out 5 minutes early & always remove halfway through baking to tap the tin down on top of the hob - adds to the density.

Melt butter & dark chocolate, stir & leave to cool.
Whisk sugar & eggs together until pale & thick, mix in vanilla & the melted butter & chocolate.
Sift in the flour & fold in with the rest of the dry ingredients - I do dust these with a small amount of the flour to stop any descending to the bottom of the tin.
Cool in tin then cut into squares.
Makes 18
