My Dad just washing with soap and smelt of shaving cream. There is a thread on Basenotes asking what perfume your Mum and Dad wore? Loads of posts what their Dad's wore. My big brother was a Mod back in the day and when he went to the bathroom, you had to make sure you went to the loo as he was in there for hours and when he came out the room was clogging with smells of his products.

Back in history men were the dandies wore face makeup, ears pierced and even heels silk clothes. Only at the beginning of the Victorian era did things began to change. Now it seems we are going full circle.

Always loved a man smelling of Brut and Sandalwood aftershaves but I’m so sensitive to migraines now. My uncle whom I adored used Imperial Leather soap and was very particular about his hygiene. I love a man to have nice nails, not overly manicured just cared for and clean. Dad didn’t use any aftershave but he was very particular about his hands. Nice nails are an essential, my dad had very nice nails & so does Mr T. I never fail to be amazed by how fragrances, well smells in general,evoke a memory; Imperial Leather is the smell of my grandparents bathroom, Body Shop White Musk is my nephews when they were babies because my sister always wore it & I recently discovered that Aqua Manda has been brought back - the perfume of my teens.

My husband and both my sons age 23 and 28 use skincare products.
The boys got into a good habit encouraged by me from being teenagers and do cleanse,moisturise and use masks etc along with hair products.They both have lovely skin!
My husband is a Philosophy purity user (and 60yr old engineer)and likes to moisturise and uses an eye product-he also has lovely skin.

I'm fine with it -until they want to share my stuff :mysmilie_17:

My hubby is a 66 year old ex miner and he uses block soap and Aldi deodorant and if we`re going out somewhere he`ll add a splash of aftershave. The only thing he uses on his face is shaving cream and for a 66 year old man his skin is pretty good.
When he was down the pit they used the large blocks of Fairy household soap or carbolic soap in the pit head baths. The household soap is no longer available but we recently found some carbolic soap on a market stall and he was delighted. He`s easily pleased !

What's carbolic soap please. I've seen the fairy household soap however. In India they use the latter to handwash clothes. The majority don't have a washing machine. What would one use Fairy soap for here? I'm well in to cleaning products!

Maybe Mr L could try SBC's propolis gel on his legs to help the itchy psoriasis as it might help more than the Aveeno. I have psioratic arthritis and this has been a huge help for me. It has cleared up the rash on my face, neck and legs and the new Propolis shampoo is now improning the condition of my scalp. It has been a bit of a miracle worker for me, so much so that the Dermatology department at the hospital asked what I was using because of the improvement.

This is so helpful. I've always fancied the propolis, but was put off because I thought that the Collagen was rather synthetic & it nips my skin. I'd really love to know more here....My Mom & Mr B & the dog have itchy scalp & use Neutrogena T gel, but an alternative would be super. Not convinces that the T gel is safe for Moms coloured hair either.

Mum washed our hair in carbolic to keep nits away, very strong block of soap not for the face. Mum washed shirts in Fairy household soap, really good for collars.

Carbolic soap is an antiseptic soap made from coal tar, there's one called Wright's traditional coal soap & many others available online, some are blue but the traditional colour is a brownish orangey pink.It's an all purpose soap for bodies & the home, I know someone who makes a carbolic soap spray for his garden to get rid of bugs & the smell is reassuringly clean.

The Fairy household soap was a big chunk of green soap which came in boxes of 2. My Mum used it on shirt collars, she hand washed woolens with it too and she also washed us when we were little in it too. It was a soap made with a high percentage of olive oil so it was non drying on the skin and she`d grate it and mix it with hot water to make a liquid soap which she used as a shampoo. It could be used all around the the house for cleaning and washing, hence the name household soap.
The carbolic soap we found was on a stall selling household cleaning products on Bury market, it was unbranded and was in a 3 pack, dark pinky red in colour and strong smelling. Very antiseptic kind of smell. Hubby said it was just like the carbolic they used back at the pits. There were no labels on the pack so I`ve no idea who made it or where it came from.

QVC have a three part set 236 898 which is a big outlay to try and maybe not like. What you might prefer is to have a search on ebay for 100 ml bottles of the gel, shampoo and shower gel first.I tried Neutrogena T gel years ago and it didn't work for me but it made a lovely job of stripping my dyed hair! I hope you have success if you try it and let us know what you think. We all have different opinions and experiances of products and I know it's generally try it for youself and see what works.

I remember keeping my Mum stocked up with beauty products from the staff discounted Canteen shop - L'Aimant in the black bottle with the dipstick was ONE shilling !! and there was also Muguet des Bois - Lily of the Valley. I used to love a rival product - it was Pagan which I think is till available but doesn't seem to smell the same. My gran always kept a 4711 cool stick in her handbag to rub on her temples if she had a headache !!

We used Lifebuoy carbolic soap it was red, to wash yourselves with. The odd time it was the Fairy version. My aunt always had Cameo soap I thought her very posh. :mysmilie_17:

My Mum wore Coty La Mont(sp) or the poor woman's no5 as it was known also, Tweed. In her bag, she had little bottles of Pagan and a cream one called Styx. I liked the latter two. When I was older she still wore Tweed but Madam Rochas and Youth Dew.

When me and the husband bought our fist home, I had Pears soap sitting proudly in its little dish, it looked so nice, just like a big piece of Amber, funny how tastes change though, we haven't used blocks of soap in our house for about twenty years, much prefer liquid. As for perfume, my sister (late seventies early 80s) always used to wear "Gingham" perfume and it was lovely, that and "Charlie" I used to sneak a spritz when she wasn't looking :mysmilie_17:
