Groupon (yes, I'm a groupon groupie) have had a few excellent yankee deals on recently, however, you can't choose the scents. I got 8 car fresh thingies for a tenner and I paid £4.99 for one in Asda. Just burning flowers in the sun - my new favourite.

Aren't these US scents rather than the new UK ones? I shall get them if they are large jars (natch!!!!!) at a good price.

I am currently burning Lavender Vanilla and Bundle Up. Well I think Bundle Up is LOVELY!! And it has a fantastic throw too, almost drowning Lavender Vanilla.

I recently finished Tarte Tatin which I did like and Pain au Raisin. Well, talk about tunnelling in the latter. I was digging out embankments like there was no tomorrow. And the flame was really tiny. I was glad to get rid of it.

Darn it, have I got that wrong, I thought that was part of the UK scents but maybe not - I'm really after the coastal living batch of UK scents so I hope that's part of the AD...we shall see!

Ooh I love Lavender Vanilla, one of my absolute faves - put the melt cup on in my bedroom before I go to bed, so relaxing. Hmmm, so annoying re the tunnelling - I wonder if the brown/beige coloured scents are prone to doing that as my Candied Pecans is a nightmare for doing that.

It is Lemon Lavender I can't abide. Well, on cold sniff at least I find it disgusting, but I did have one which was not too bad as it burnt. I would never want a full size candle again though. I also can't get my head round Peach Lavender as a mix, it sounds very odd to me so wouldn't really want that one. But this gelato one sounds OK to me.

When I was in Scotland recently I picked up some Yankee large jars at a shopping outlet village for £8.99 each. I've never had jars before, not even the smaller ones never mind these big ones, only tarts & votives.
I've heard of tunnelling but what is it & how do you avoid it?

{Rubs hands with glee} you've come to the right place on this forum!!!!!!!

I will start but the heavy guns will no doubt join the fray.

Tunnelling: what happens when you don't let a candle burn to the sides of the jar. That means you have a liquid pool right across the jar.

Preventing tunnelling: burn jar in a draught-free location. Use an illuma lid or one of the other jar top items, such as a hurricane lantern... Or improvise with tinfoil.

Remedying tunneling: remover the wax til it is at the same level as the inner pool surrounding the wick. Preferably create a slight dip so the wax slopes downward slightly towards the glass.

I use a table knife to create the slope and a spoon to scoop out the additional wax (save it to melt as a tart, or reserve to add back in once the candle is burning and the wax molten).

My experience is that illuma lids are the best tunnelling prevention aid, and if you don't have one use tinfoil to create a collar around the rim of the jar which should cup the aperture and reduce the open area above the flame.

I await the real experts but what I describe worked very well for me, based on others' advice.

Great post, Maymorganlondon, this forum is the best :mysmilie_14:

100% what maymorganlondon said!!!

If it is still warm I have tried to squodge the wax at the sides down into the pool with the blunt end of a biro but the carving of an "embankment" - who came up with that, was it Tarketta? - is really the best way. If the tunnelling isn't too bad I have found that the illuma lid corrected it the next night without needing to wield the knife. It is a great invention, all my shades are just in the cupboard these days. Mind you, some candles just won't behave as per my earlier post re Pain Au Raisin.

I will humbly lay claim to coining the term "embankment" on this forum :mysmilie_50:

It's brilliant and an official term here. With PAR it went from "oh I had better make an embankment" to "don't tell me you need another ****** embankment you ba****d candle!"

:mysmilie_59:

Thank you for that, very helpful
So I need a lid. Do you get them from Amazon? Q don't seem to have them anyway.
I see there are jar holders too, are they necessary? Is it ok to stand them on a coaster? I assume they get very hot.
As you can see I'm a complete novice at this but looking forward to trying them.

This cracked me up, Mazza - I have the exact same conversation with Candied Pecans :mysmilie_13:

Breeze, re the jar candles, the medium and large ones definitely burn better with an illuma lid and you will need to trim the wick each time you burn them otherwise they smoke like b*ggers. I'd recommend you get the accessories from Amazon, or some people seem to get bargains from local shops which stock YC, so keep an eye out - I wouldn't expect to pay more than £7 for a wick trimmer (I thought scissors would do the trick, but very difficult to reach down into a well-burnt large candle jar) and £6 for an illuma lid. Personally, I never bother with jar holders as I'm not fussed about the candles not matching my decor - I don't believe they add to the burning efficiency of a candle (could be wrong) but are more of an aesthetic preference. The bottom doesn't get that hot even when the candle is nearly at an end, but then again, if you're burning them on any kind of vulnerable surface, e.g. a wood table, then probably a good idea to bung them on a coaster.

Whatever you pick, enjoy!

I am a fairly recent convert to jar holders. I always use an Illuma-lid too but I'm convinced the holders are stopping tunnelling. I really like some jars (colour of wax and label) so it seems a shame to cover them up by putting them inside a holder but I still do so, at the moment especially, as in some cases the wax needs all the help it can get to keep warm and pool properly. I am not going to suggest you have to have a holder, however. The lids do a pretty good job.

That's interesting, AndiK, thanks for that. I've never used a jar holder before but it sounds like I should invest in one to help burn some of my pesky, tunnelling candles - would you recommend the solid jar holders, or do the ones with bits cut-out (technical term) work just as well?

I always worry that I will recommend something and it will turn out to be useless for another person but I'm definitely seeing results with the holders I've got at the moment so hopefully you would have similar success. I haven't used an open-work/cut-out one yet so not sure how effective that type would be. I'm currently using a tall, black glass one with a subtle bronzey wavy pattern running through it (think it was a Christmas 2016 range and I may put it away in spring as it looks a bit dark and cosy). I also have a plain frosted glass one. I'm not into the fancier designs, personally, but I know some people would rather have something that is almost a different "ornament" altogether and disguises the fact it's a candle. For me, the holder is about its practical use (keeping the wax warm) and I like an unfussy look.

Thanks AndiK, I'll have a look out for a reasonably priced solid glass one and see how it fares - I'll probably be kicking myself for not buying one sooner ;)

This is the black holder I'm using. I see it's described as gold, where mine is definitely more subtle a pattern and almost appears just a mottled black. I got it with a discount code for about £10-11.

I am also tempted by this which I saw on QVC last night, especially as I want a Cherry Blossom candle (Wild Mint not getting much praise though, if I'm right?) and in my head I work it out as £15 a jar and £13.45 for the holder, which is just about acceptable to me. The holder looked lovely with tealights in too, which they demonstrated, as it glows beautifully.

I really liked that clear glass holder, just watching my recording of last night's show (quickly to avoid Del Boy wittering on). I shall only get one if I spot a sale on and I already have those two candles so can't be tempted today.

I got illuma lids from Temptation gifts and perhaps -would need to check- Rhys Candles sell them too. I like both those vendors.

The clear glass holder is lovely, isn't it?

What do you think of Wild Mint and Cherry Blossom? Was it you who said Wild Mint smells like smelly veg or something? (Sorry, I should look back at older posts.)
