Re the great British public being fickle (sorry cant reply with quote as I keep getting the sodding advert pop up)

Doesnt it speak volumes about the maturity and mentality of said public. Ok, these reality shows are fine for teenagers and the like, (I lived for Ready Steady Go everyweek, and those a bit older would watch Six Five Special religiously ), but I despair when I hear the grandad generation discussing X Factor and the rest. It would have been a real turn off and a bit pathetic listening to my Dad seriously talking about Top of the Pops in the 60s ! Yes its entertainment but surely not for this age group and above. As for New Faces and Opp Knocks, a lot of genuine acts of all descriptions came out of them - many we still remember today. It will be interesting to see in 20 years time how many names will be remembered from BGT.

most of the acts that made it big from opportunity knocks were already seasoned performers regarding there experience in northern working mens clubs which most performers will have done there teething in , i seriously doubt that lads like will young would have had a similar experience

It's interesting that often the people who despise the show know an aful lot about it. And take it more seriously that the other 98% ofh TV viewing public who just think its a laugh

It's a superbly made light entertainment programme. That's all. Serious musicians need not feel threatened.

Being patronising doesnt lend much to the argument.

I know about these shows because I work in the music
industry, therefore it's my business to know.

I don't dispute they are glitzy well made shows, but thats
exactly the point, well made to manipulate the public,
the contestants and the results.Serious musicians find it harder
than ever to make it because the public is being
fed and comes to expect disposable music and artists.

Music is such a personal thing. I like what I like and sometimes I prefer untrained/amateur voices. Today was a great case in point Katherine Jenkins and Placido Domingo singing "come what may". Note perfect. But actually I prefer the Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor version. Probably no hope for my musical taste buds!

Phew i've just finished reading this thread. Some very interesting views on both sides. I don't think SB has been exploited at all, she chose to audition and got lucky. She has a good voice nothing special, imo.

Maybe i'm a peasant but i enjoy x factor and BGT for what they are, entertainment no more no less.
