Thanks Akimbo. I went in today and got a pair of sketchers bikers stroll in' in taupe for £28. They are memory foam underneath which may get too hot in the middle of summer but certainly for early spring they will be fine. I may even cut out the memory foam inner sole and replace it with some inserts. I went down 2 European sizes and 1 uk size ie 40 instead of 42 and 7 instead of 8. These were called relaxed fit and I have quite a narrow foot so that may account for the big difference in size.
I am sure that I will be able to walk miles in these.
