From Africa or Brazil..............

I'm wondering if this is the same 'Santa Maria Africana' that Gems had some time ago or.....is it the much rarer Aquamarine from

the Santa Maria mine in Brazil? I have only once ever seen the latter for sale and that was a l-o-n-g time ago!

Presuming it's the African type, I have to say I adore mine.
It'd be interesting to see how the prices compare now to a couple of years ago when I got it - if anyone sees any of the auctions, please let me know! As they're not on Freeview now I don't see them any more.

The Santa Maria Aquamarine is a beautiful stone. I have an emerald-cut antique (1929) ring and it always gets noticed when I wear it.

Essexjan that's a very pretty gemstone. Out of curiosity have you ever had it appraised/valued by a gemologist?

Yes I had it appraised by a jeweller a few years ago. That's how I found out what it was. You see, I found it, outside a theatre in the West End. It had been trodden on and the ring was out of shape. I reported it to the theatre and the police and put an ad on Craigslist. After three months the police contacted me and said they hadn't had any claim for it, so I was told I could keep it.

I took it into my jeweller (a local one which sells very good stones) to be fixed, thinking it was a blue topaz (it's not quite as lilac-y as it looks in the pictures) and he said it was one of the finest SM Aquamarines he'd ever seen, and he told me the date from the hallmark (which, thankfully, hadn't been obliterated when the ring got squashed).

A few weeks later I went with a friend on a tour of Buckingham Palace, where they had the Queen's gowns and some of her jewels on display, including her SM Aquamarines. I have to say that mine would not have looked out of place. I had it on that day and held up my hand next to the case and the colour and clarity looked as good, although the Queen's were somewhat larger (a tad, er, flashy, if I may say so).

WOW!!!!!!:envy: That is a fabulous ring and amazing story of luck. I have a small SM pendant the real Brasil one and the colour is unbelievible. People think mine is topaz as well, because the colour is nothing like the normal aquamarine colour you see.

Essexjan, that is truly a stunning ring. The stone is just gorgeous and the setting perfect for me, no twirls and swirls to detract from the beautiful stone. You are a very lucky lady - the Gods must have been smiling down on you that day!
I have a nice, slightly included aquamarine (don't know if it's Santa Maria, but very much doubt it) that my parents gave to me, but they had it set with diamonds (and, unfortunately in white gold) and I would swap with you any day.

I bought a SMA ring for my mum a couple of years ago, from GemsTV. It is a very pretty colour of stone.

What an amazing stroke of luck, essexjan - you must have been amazed when the jeweller told you what it was!
