It is a universal, psychophysical reaction, which is not as heavily influenced by culture, age and gender as generally thought. Scientifically, colour is the first thing we register when we are assessing anything, especially gemstones. On a wider level, the colours of our environment affect our behaviour and mood. When yellow daffodils, bluebells and colourful crocuses appear, we immediately begin to feel livelier; when grey skies and rain or snow surround us we instinctively draw in. The colours that people wear send out clear signals that we can all read accurately. Given that colour is the single most important factor when assessing gems, contributing about 50 percent of a gem’s final value, it makes sense to understand how colour influences mood and behaviour from a world expert on the unconscious effects of colour.<br /><br />Angela Wright began to explore seriously the mystery of colour in the seventies. Until then, the effects of colour were generally considered to be completely subjective, and therefore impossible to predict. She studied psychoanalytical psychotherapy at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton, England, before studying the dynamics of colour in Carmel, California, U.S.A., identifying links between patterns of colour and patterns of human behaviour. She formulated a clear hypothesis, which became the basis of the Colour Affects System, an academically sound and demonstrably effective system that crossed cultural boundaries and, for the first time, enabled colour psychology to be applied objectively, rationally and with remarkable accuracy. During the nineties, the system was subjected to stringent scientific scrutiny at world class academic levels and found to consistently hold true. Ms. Wright was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1998. Her 1995 book, ‘The Beginner’s Guide to Colour Psychology’ continues to sell steadily across the world and she is currently working on her second book, provisionally entitled ‘The Colour of Money’.<br /><br />Don’t miss Angela tonight on Sky channel 642, 7pm to 9pm.
