A pallet knife and a butter knife were used by my late mother. Without her knowledge, I once utilized a wallpaper scraper. She and I were equally puzzled by the damage she discovered when she next defrosted it.

Genius! I use big pans of boiling water on each shelf and shut the door, letting the steam do the trick. But I have a wooden stir-fry type spatula thing that I sort of karate chop at the stubborn piece of ice at the top, doesn't harm the freezer that way.
