Original Cake Company bargain??

Noticed the Original Cake Co has a special offer on at the mo - a 6 inch cake in various flavours, down from £17 to £12.12. Bargain?? Perhaps for some who buy but definitely not in my book when Tesco/Sainsbury's etc are turning out their extra special ranges for around £3.50. But my thread doesn't end there! Postage on said cake is - wait for it, £5.95!!! That's 50% again of cake cost making this "bargain" £18.07- for a 6 inch cake!! Is it me or is this absolute madness? ( not even mentioning that some of the flavours contain palm products)

Go to our local garden centre and you'll pay £4 for one scone (without butter, that's extra). Cakes are a ridiculous price. I've no sweet tooth so I never buy them but I do make the odd one for Mr CC and Bry.

I could cook a 6” cake myself for less than that if I could be bothered to. I occasionally add a Tesco’s Finest coffee and walnut cake for £3.50 to my grocery order. Certainly wouldn’t spend the ludicrous prices from QVC.

My cakes are usually failures because I substitute ingredients or use the wrong size cake tin. I just can't seem to learn to stick to a recipe. I eat them, though and my dog, Hank, is always appreciative. I made some rock cakes this morning. They are a bit dry and heavy (I substituted oil for butter) but they'll be fine with a cup of tea.

Definitely not just you. It's madness. Nearly £20 for a very ordinary, factory-made cake.

I'd expect to pay about £7 for a cake like that and I certainly wouldn't be prepared to pay £5.95 just to get it delivered which would make it £12.95 which would be way over the top to pay for an "ordinary cake". I know that special occasion cakes can cost a lot more than that but at the end of the day these are just what I'd class as a teatime cake. I mean you can get tea time deals in a restaurant for that kind of money, so basically they can sod off!

I must admit I "cheated" over the weekend and bought a Jane Asher chocolate fudge cake mix from Home Bargains for £1.59. Had to add sunflower oil, eggs and butter for the fudge icing. It made an enormous 8 inch cake, everyone said it was delicious . Added choc drops to the top icing. Reckon the total was less than £4, Inc gas! Far less than the postage costs!

I think people are tempted because they assume the cake or whatever is going to be something unusual and special that you wouldn't get from your supermarket, you convince yourself it's going to be really out of the ordinary. I confess I've been sucked into buying these items myself, but experience has taught me that the reality of it is they usually don't taste any better than one you can make yourself or factory-made one from a supermarket. And this also applies to other types of food, such as speciality crisps. Never bought any food items from Q, though, as all the ones I've seen looked to be an out and out take-ons (the mince pies at Christmas, for instance - unless they had a gold bar baked inside).

Always make my own cakes. Shop cakes have a shelf life of months ! So what's in them ???
Valerie Patisserie - expensive, but now online and I've sent a couple of gateaux to family for birthdays and they've raved about them.

The only food item I bought from QVC, apart from EasiYo, was a pack of Calico Cottage fudge mixes. Absolutely yummy and was a reasonable price for the quantity you got. The lovely Jilly Jones was BA for both brands.

On Tuesday I made a Bakewell tray bake and a dozen ginger biscuits and the whole lot cost no more than about £6/7. I would certainly not ever buy food from QVC as with postage it is way out of my budget.

No Its not just you its called "common Sense" If a few hundred buy these over priced cakes that good money for QVC!

I’ll own up to the fact that I don’t bake cakes, biscuits, brownies or anything like that. I haven’t done so for years. As I now live on my own it doesn’t seem worth it so when I fancied something like that I would buy it.

However, I haven’t eaten any cake or biscuits etc for over a year now so, although the Original Cake Company offerings look tasty they pass me by.
