Let's talk Curry

I love curries and may even be addicted to them!

I make lots at home using jars of curry sauces eg Pataks, buy takeaways, and very occassionally make one from scratch.

My current Indian curry favourite is Dhansak, which is hot, sweet, and sour. A ready-made Dhansak sauce is not available in ANY shops I've tried, so I buy it on-line from Butcher's Sundries.

But I also like Chinese curries from a takeaway. There are jars of Chinese curry sauce available, but none are authentic.

Do you like or hate curry? If you like them, which are your favourites.

Love dal and coconut. Anything with those in it are very attractive to me. Curries which are medium-ish or less get my vote.

They have lots of flavours, but not cheap.

I love a curry especially a chicken curry . I don’t think I can say what my absolute favourite is . I guess it depends what mood I’m in. I love Punjaban curry sauces and of those the butter chicken is my favourite. I actually haven’t ordered a take away curry since the food poisoning we got when we visited ohs family roundabout this time last year!

Yes I love curry and it`s a good job I do because we live just over a mile away from Pataks factory and depending which way the wind is blowing we frequently get a whiff of whichever product they`re cooking up. It`s a huge factory and employs a lot of local people plus they supply many supermarkets with their ready made curries and also frozen curries. Plus their regular jars and tins of sauces etc and various breads. They`re a huge concern these days.
Their website offers recipes so the link below is the recipe for their dhansak curry. At one time myself and Mr V ate out at least one evening a week at a local Indian restaurant but we`d worked our way through most of the menu so decided to have a break for a while.
One of the nicest curries I had was made by a friend who`se Mother had been born in India and had passed on much of her cookery skills. Sadly the friend has since passed away so those days have now gone.
I don`t make curries because I`m one of those cooks who actually hates cooking and by the time I`ve made something and finished all the prep and cooking, I no longer want to eat it because I`ve already seen enough of it so I much prefer eating a ready made curry.

Now you are talking. I often buy jars of Patak's Madras and Vindaloo spice paste, or the madras paste pots. I love chicken madras, pork belly vindaloo, chicken phal, mushroom, bell pepper and onion madras, and mixed vegetable curry from Chinese takeaways (sorry, but I don't trust the meat from them).

I buy frozen blocks of mayflower Chinese-style curry sauce from my local Heron Foods store (227g for £0.85p). Just add what you like to it, or even just the curry sauce on chips, and it will taste just like something you get from a Chinese takeaway.

I'd love to have a curry - any curry - but I live in a land where most people only want pasta and pizza. I could buy ingredients from Amazon and make one at home, but I know it would be a far cry from the real thing. I'll think about it, however and maybe give it a try.

Not a fan,can't each chilli,don't like the taste of cumin either. Hubby was a fan of curry sauce from the chinese when we used to have a chinese, he was a fan of it from the chippy and poured it over his chips,soggy chips are a huge no no for me.
He makes his own curries and gets his spices etc from a company called East.

I used to make my own curry in the slow cooker, and it was ready when I came home from work.

Okay, now I just buy and nuke in the microwave. M&S have really upped their own brand ones. I don't eat lamb, so it is chicken, prawn or beef for me. As there is only me, I never order take away as I don't need all the side dishes as too much for me.

My granny always had a pot of curry powder you could add when she made stew. I have mentioned this to people, and they think it is very weird, not sure if it was because she was Scottish?

Lamb madras for me or a chicken ceylon. I don't make curries as they never taste authentic so we buy them from the local restaurant.

The first curry I remember having was in the 80s and it was Batcherlor's curry sauce mix in a red tub. My mother used to work in a chippy and brought home the powder they used to mix with water to make the curry. Then it was curry and chips from the Chinese in the late 80s and 90s. I am sure it was tins of Patak's curry? I started off with tikka masala and after trying most of flavours, madras was the one for me.

I used to make curries with shop bought curry sauces, but since starting to eat healthily last February, I now make my own version by liberally adding a variety of different spices. They never turn out the same way twice because I just toss the spices in but, so far, they’ve been edible.

Oh, yes, weird dried stuff. I remember still seeing it in my local Co.op a few years ago and shocked at how expensive it was.

My mum used to make a pork curry with the remains of the Sunday roast when we had pork.
Cubed cooked pork coated in Sharwoods medium curry powder, onions all fried before adding stock (usually involving OXO cubes) and a tablespoon of flour. Sometimes it was pretty hot, other times I think mum forgot the curry powder. It was still better than Vesta or the takeaway when that arrived. Always served with Sharwoods green label mango chutney and rice and poppadums. These days my mango chutney allegiance has transferred to Geeta's with its whole spices.
I keep meaning to try cooking a biryani, but I need guests to make that work out successfully.

I also remember tins of "SHARWOODS CURRY IN A HURRY" which was quite nice but then disappeared.

Also tins of M&S curry beef was nice, but then that disappeared as well.

I have just remembered a curry served at my secondary school. This happened during the 1980s. Going home for dinner used to be my routine, but if I had stayed for school dinners, I wouldn't have tried this. A sweet curry sauce that included sultanas and boiled eggs was served with rice.

I was planning to have it today, but my boiler has broken down, have been waiting all day for someone who was supposed to call between 1000 and 1300 but it is now 1535 and no sign of him, so I will probably have something simpler like baked beans

Oh, Vesta curries - them were the days! How sophisticated I thought I was, about to chomp on one made by a friend....only to find it resembled eating coal dust with hard bits of coal thrown in for good measure. I should have known better - she failed her cookery badge when we were in Brownies together, let that be a warning....

I enjoy curry, but can't manage the hotter ones. Chicken tikka masala is my favourite, so you might say I'm a curry lightweight.
