Although when I haven't waited in line and just walked straight to the till in Marks and they say thanks for waiting I KNOW it means nothing and is only a word in their mouth.

I would much rather they were polite and a smile and keep the platitudes for when they actually apply to the situtation.

Yes - it is by rote... but I'd rather staff had politeness ingrained in them. More chance that it will stick when they've really had a bad day and then they won't take it out on an unsuspecting customer.
