My ears must be deceiving me! Dave Troth has just confirmed there is actual moss in moss agate. Ellis latched on immediately, equally laugh out loud. There must have been some sort of cataclysmic event, she questioned, for the green colour of the chlorophyll to have been preserved. If it had formed over millennia in the usual way, the moss would have turned brown?! You could see “Oh for sure. 100%” Dave suddenly very unsure and desperate to change the topic.

Moss agate is a semi-precious stone that, despite its name, is actually a variety of chalcedony quartz rather than agate. Agate is technically a chalcedony typically characterized by distinct concentric banding and layering, which moss agate lacks. Instead, moss agate has a transparent to milky white field with moss-like light to dark green inclusions. These dendritic inclusions are not actually made up of moss, but instead likely manganese or iron. "Dendritic" inclusions are non-organic metallic oxide inclusions that have a branching appearance similar to ferns, trees, ice crystals, and of course - moss!

I saw it listed as “aquatic agate” and recalled they were flogging the same “sell out” showcase 2 months ago as Moss Agate, very exclusive and high end because Dave was in a special auction preview room when he spotted it. I can suggest where the moss is growing and it’s not in the agate.
