I had a gadget from Q via Hermes today.

No idea what "hub trailer via sorter" means!

But it was delivered today at 1110 BUT I DID NOT SIGN FOR IT. The courier didn't even have his machine with him.

But, as you can see below, I supposedly signed for it.

I've had occasions when the driver hasn't had their machine with them, or said its faulty and told me they will sort it out and mark it as delivered.

I've also had occasions when items have been left with neighbours, no card left and the tracker shows that the customer has signed for it. I used to go looking for it but now just contact whoever sent it and get them to trace it. Annoying!

Strangely enough an occasional QVC parcel doesn't require a signature; my Hermes courier always comments because he scans the label but for no obvious reason it doesn't prompt for a signature. Also, when his car is out of action the stand-by courier just leaves parcels on the step if I don't answer the door quickly and if I follow the tracking links for these items it just says "delivered to porch" so I wonder whether there's some flexibility about the couriers delivering without a signature if it saves them having to return another day? From their point of view it must be better to obtain a signature for their own security. There seems to be some margin to deliver without getting a signature.

I've never had to provide a signature for Hermes deliveries, even if I'm at home the courier just leaves the parcels in a safe place. Sometimes the tracking says "signature from customer", sometimes it doesn't. I imagine it could cause problems though if someone were to steal the package, if the tracking says you've signed for it yet it's not there then you could be in a bit of a pickle.

But to be honest it suits me. Also when I've had to return things (not for QVC, but for Next who use Hermes) I know I can just leave the parcel in the safe place and my courier will know where to look!

Hermes experience does seem to vary according to courier, I think I'm one of the lucky ones who has an excellent one.

2 days ago, whilst untangling one of my cats from the net curtain ( he had decided to climb in through the small front room window and gotten caught up), I observed an incident in a delivery van.

I live opposite a minor hospital (no A&E ) and they are always getting deliveries from all different companies. It was about 4.30 pm, and i watched as a woman got out and delivered a parcel to the hospital, and the driver got out and opened the side door on the van side, facing me.

It was a plain white van, no company logo, but there was a large parcel propped up and facing out with a pink very.co.uk logo on it. The driver began sorting out parcels, well throwing them around back of van, and i couldn't believe it when he actually stepped on top of 2 parcels to reach others!

So if you live in plymouth and received a damaged parcel with a boot shaped footprint on it, after 4.30pm on wednesday, you now know why.

Or, possibly if you had a return picked up and the company say it was returned in a damaged state . . . . . . .

Hub Trailer Via Sorter means that the parcel has been picked up from QVC and taken to Hermes central hub ready for dispatch to the delivery depot near you

I never have the same person deliver in my area, when my last parcel arrived I asked if he wanted me to sign and he said don't bother I will scribble something.

I`ve never signed for anything I`ve ordered from Q. My Hermes guy works with his Mum, she drives and he gets out and delivers the parcels to the door. I`ve seen him scan parcels but I`ve never signed for one yet. I must admit Hermes gets a lot of bad press but I honestly can`t complain about my Mother and son duo.
