Yep, my Mum also had a beaver lamb, and it weighed a ton ! she also owned a short rabbit coat with padded shoulders (a la Joan Crawford)- but like the other posters, this was during the pre and post war years when synthetic fabrics had yet to be invented. How many of us have old photos with aunties wearing a fox fur ? yes we've moved on, and because its recent history we are still horrified. Although I don't exactly recoil in horror at the sight of Davy Crocket in his beaver hat, because during THAT historical time it was a case of survival with animal fur and meat, or die. The same applies to ivory before 1948, thousands of elephants perished for their tusks, now thank God outlawed, but there are still collectors willing to pay ridiculous amounts for decorative ivory items.
Its not only the US where real fur is big business, just walk down any exclusive shopping area in Europe during winter and you're awash with the real and very expensive coats walking about.
