I bought the very first CF on QVC, a 160GB hard drive back up and, until the last few months, have found it to be extremely efficient. Firstly, the name belies the operation of the item, as a box pops up asking me to confirm I want to allow it to do it's job, so it's not click free. Now, it isn't even giving me the option to back up at all, so the unit is defunct. I suppose I oughtn't to complain, as I have had my money's worth out of it - it is several years old. I will certainly purchase another from QVC as I believe in the product, and QVC have excellent prices. I am just wondering, however, has anyone else had this problem?

I think I bought the first one too.

Was yours a big one that needed power, or a cig-packet size that got its power from the USB.

I didn't have to click mine as it started a countdown as soon as I plugged it in, and only had to click if I wanted to stop it backing up (or change its setup).

Sorry to hijack the thread but I bought one of the first ones years ago and it was great. I have since moved on to a MAC computer and want to back it up. Some of the new ones you can back up MAC's but having read all the stories on here I am a little bit concerned. I was tempted by the one they had on yesterday with a super bargain price - 500 935 but it already had a review on it saying it was crap.

Does anyone have any experience of the newer ones?

Rosey, you might not need a Click Free at all with a Mac as you can back everything up to iCloud, Apple's big storage space in the sky. You get 5GB free and can buy more space. Check it out on the Apple website before spending any money on Click Free.

Oh - I thought you had to pay for icloud. I will go investigate. Or pop into the Apple shop tomorrow when I am in town. They are always very helpful in there.

Thanks Flamenco x

The first 5BG is free. I think I paid an extra £15 for a further 8GB of iCloud storage. Certain backups, like iTunes are outside of the 5GB and free to back up (if my memory serves me right). Anyway, the folk at your Apple Store will be able to tell you more. Would you mind posting the info on this thread as I wouldn't mind some more info on iCloud myself.

You used to have to pay for Apple's MobileMe but that was scrapped with the iCloud service.

No problem Flamenco - it will give me a good reason to pop into the Apple store tomorrow - I love it in there. Just like a kid in a sweetshop. I have everything Apple as the products are amazing and the customer service is absolutely second to none. Will just have to try to keep my credit card in my purse

Backing up to the cloud is all very well, but all your photos, emails, letters etc etc are then available for any Apple techie to look at, and possibly anyone else to hack into.

Do you really want strangers reading your personal letters etc?

The data is encrypted and secure in iCloud. Also, someone would need to know your iTunes username and password. I've not read any issues concerning lack of security with Apple's iCloud service. I could well be open to correction but I'd be very surprised if Apple hadn't covered this issue when developing iCloud.

Thanks, Rosey for that. I love visiting the Apple store too. I am a total Apple nut now, iPhones, MacBooks, iPad at home. Once you've had Mac, you won't go back LOL

I bought the first Click free TSV and it still works perfectly. Like stratrobuddy, I get a reminder that I need to back up and it starts up automatically once I've clicked the icon.

I know they've now updated them but, after reading about the problems some people have had with the new models, I'm sticking with this 'old' version.

I bought a click free last year for the first time as I was planning to get a new PC and thought it would be great to transfer all the stuff from my PC to new laptop but I couldnt get it to do it and still havent worked out how to do it
I have everything backed up on the click free that bit was easy enough

There is always a risk that someone could hack into any of the Cloud storage sties - but as long as you stick to a reputable site then the risk is minimal.

Went into the Apple Store yesterday - the assistant was great (as always) gave me an indepth tutorial on the Icloud. Here is a short synopsis Flamenco just bear in mind I am SO UN-TECHY:

If you have several devices ie Iphone, Ipad and Macbook then you use the Icloud as a storage space for all your contacts, photos, calendar etc. You get 5gb free if you need over this you have to pay but I was assured that this was quite a lot. It means that when you take a photo on your iphone it will magically appear on your Iphotos on your mac etc. So basically the three devices will always be synced. It is supposed to be very secure.

For actually backing up the Macbook documents etc. you use Apple's Timeline - you just need to buy an external hard drive which you can get for around £50 - the timeline programme will automatically back it up at specified times, you just need to do a little bit of setting up.

You can read more about these on the Apple website or else ask next time you are in Store. Hope this helps. I am off to try to set mine up now - fingers crossed, it all sounded very easy yesterday!

THANK YOU Rosey! That's excellent info. I know I already have iCloud set up as photos I take on my iPhone also appear in my iPad and MacBook (in Photostream). Thanks for the info on Time Machine (I think its Time Machine not Timeline but I could be wrong!). I do have a back up drive I bought from Amazon a while ago, for Mac, but haven't used it. I should try it, having been too lazy to bother (and never hearing of Apple Macs crashing and losing data). Apple Stores are just brilliant for their free and helpful advice, aren't they?! Thanks again!

You are right Flamenco - I came back on to say it was Time Machine and not Timeline but you beat me to it

My ipad is busy syncing all my data to my Icloud now.

I love going into the Apple store - the staff are amazing and so helpful. I only wish I had a bigger bank balance as I think I would buy everything in the store - I already have most - Macbook, Ipad, Iphone, Ipod touch, Ipod Shuffle and Apple TV LOL I also have my eye on a lovely patent red Ted Baker bag they have in there to store them all in but keep thinking how often will I need all these gadgets in the one bag:grin:

Ooooo what's Apple TV like? I know that Apple are revamping it and bringing out a new version sometime this year. Totting up the Apple products in our household (there are 3 of us): 2 x MacBook Pro, iPod Touch, iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4. We are happily doing our bit to keep Apple in healthy profit. I won a really nifty MacBook bag which also has a compartment for my iPad and iPhone. Its worth £50 but I hardly use it, so you might not use the lovely Ted Baker as much as you'd hope to! I also think these dedicated bags merely draw attention to the contents and I always worry whether I simply become a mugging target when walking with it. Hence, I hardly use it. If I take my MacBook out, I tend to put it in the dedicated compartment in my Kipling Seoul backpack. My iPad2 tends to fit in most of my Kipling bags

I love my Apple TV - I am so rubbish with Techy stuff - even the dvd player is beyond me. Mainly because my eyesight is crap without my glasses on - so I can never work out which buttons to press. We actually have a pull out dock on the dvd player which can play ipods etc. but as I can't work it and being lazy I can just sit on the sofa and press the right button on the Apple remote and have any song/video playing off my iphone/ipad. You can also play Youtube clips and instructions straight onto it - either off the ipad or directly from Apple TV. We have bought and watched movies straight through it. And it has internet radio with hundreds of stations on it.

It is really easy to use and the remote is simple - just 3 buttons.

Next time you are in a store get them to give you a demo - they usually have one set up in store. I bought mine as an xmas pressie for myself.
