Why waste your postage on something that tv cannot convey to you. You have to actually smell a perfume to decide if you like it. All the waffle in the world can't tell you what it will smell like. The Penhaligons 5pm show has some ridiculous prices too, over £100 for 100ml Eau de toilette!

I know what you mean, I've never bought perfume off the TV yet I've bought bath/shower products without knowing what they smell like and makeup without seeing the shades properly. Go figure?

Penhaligon's, yes I own some of them. But fragrance is all about body chemistry you can get a nasty or lovely surprise when they hit your skin and settle down.

Penhaligon's was bought out by an American company some years back, the prices suddenly sky rocket. I love their store in Princess Square Glasgow. They do fabulous leather goods, my makeup bag is a Penhaligon and I have had it over ten years. My keyring is one, orange leather shaped like a cat.

Bluebell is suppose to have been worn by the Queen.

Strange they don't have their original which is Hammam Bouquet all rose, jasmine from 1800s.

Their candles are gorgeous, but the prices compared to the old days very high.

Violetta is a parma violet in the old style.

Well Tova is one thing, I often have bought Tova for gifst but Penhaligans is really really expensive. I wont be buying any. That guest and Franks are living in another world.

What annoys me is when the presenters think that describing a smell is using a range of adjectives like gorgeous, lovelyl, beautiful, uplifting and sensual. Yes but what does it smell like??!

We need Donna presenting the perfume shows.

Franks is going way overbored suggesting a single £30 bath product is an amazing gift for a friend. Most products are over the £100 price point, apparently Jill has or will be buying many of them. Gsh that women is so self indulgent. I find her suggestions quite obscene, assuming viewers have this kind of money to chance on an annoymous scent

I think it's odd too but what you actually need to do is try a perfume a few times to know so if you can work out from the description whether its something you might like it could be a good idea.

Trouble is I can't work out from a description whether I would actually like it or not. So it's no ruddy good to me.

I've had several perfumes of theirs. The windsor shop has now closed, they used to give out samples to try. I have a lovely travel leather jewellery pouch from them. It is still in great condition after many years and has a little dust bag.
I agree about not being able to buy perfume by mail order as I bought the Jane packer samples and didn't like them at all.

I have returned every single perfume I have ever bought from QVC, bar one-L'Occitane Ambre- (which I had sniffed in a shop first).

I think I have finally learnt my lesson!

I have bought one scent off Amazon following a reccommendation from Flamenco- and I am glad I did. My other perfumes I know of old as I have sniffed or purchased from department stores over the last 25 years.

Forgot to say it's ok with make up from Q- better in fact. You can see the demo, get a fair idea of the colours, really try a full application on your face, wear it all day at work, test how long it lasts before you need to touch up, and whether you look like a panda at the end of the day. If it's rubbish you can send it back. You can't do that in the shops, and testing on your hand or jawline is not the same. So department stores for perfume, Q for make up IMO.

That is why one can shop with confidence from QVC, if one is not fully satisfied with the purchase, it can be returned for a full refund. I have bought perfume and liked it; I have just returned the Pecksniffs ladies wardrobe, as it was a bit too overpowering for me. I missed the Penhaligons hour due to work but, after checking what was in the hour, I could not believe over £100 for EDT. The Jo Malone Pink Vetiver at £90 for EDP seems an absolute bargain! I had never even heard of this brand till it was advertised on QVC. What is so special about it?

Penhaligans is a really old make that has been in high end stores for quite a long time. It's a bit like Burberry for smellies. Someone once bought me the Bluebell bath oil - it was nice but completely wasted on me as I was a teenager at the time!!! Still, it was a lovely gesture from a sweet man.

I`m surprised Q aren`t selling the Penhaligon perfume library. I think its around £16 on the Penhaligon site but it gives you an opportunity to try around 10 of their fragrances. Penhaligons do a number of uni sex fragrances too. I used to buy direct from them, tried one or two of their perfumes after i bought the tester kit and also bought one of their leather makeup bags and vanity cases which are still going strong even after a number of years. I like their Artemesia perfume and their LP fragrance but haven`t bought any for a while because the prices rocketed.

Pink Vetyver is by Jo Loves. But the Jo of Jo Loves is Jo Malone. She just doesn't have anything to do with Jo Malone after she sold it a few years ago. I haven't tried any of the Jo Loves fragrances but I am a huge fan of Jo Malone. I love Red Roses, English Pear & Freesia and Pomegranate Noir. My favourite is Red Roses and I'm hard pushed to say whether that is my all time favourite fragrance or whether that's Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose. I am never without a Jo Malone perfume.

Happy for Jo Loves to be on La Q but don't want Jo Malone to be on. It might bankrupt me!!

I was just about to post about the library, I have one of its previous incarnations and it's good value for £16 you get 10 x 10ml phials. Mine are slightly different selection to the current set offered on the Penhaligon's website, I'm currently wearing Endymion (only a single drop as it can be over-powering) and Malabah (probably my fav). Funny how I forget I have things and when something jogs my memory (like appearing on QVC) I start dabbling with a brand again. I love the way real perfume buffs write so lyrically about fragrances and QVC should encourage the "experts" alowing them free reign to weave a verbal picture of their scents instead of relying on ninnies like Franks repeating "amazing" "incredible" etc.

I don't get on with fragrances 90% of the time I'll get a migraine but it still fascinates me ...probably that's why it fascinates me!

We have a Penhaligans shop in town, never been in because it looks so posh and a bit intimidating lol. This thread is making me want to go in and have a sniff around.
My new favourute though is Chanel Coco Noir, hate the original Coco but this is beautiful, very soft and warm, not strong and headachy like the original, don't know why they called it Coco anything, quite misleading.

i'm rediscovering my old scents that i loved in the 70's. y by ysl is still my favourite and diorella. y i can pick up for pennies on bargain websites

I think q is perfect for trying out fragrances. Purchased the l'artisan rose. Not for me so well worth the cost of trying It properly before making a decision.

I love Princes Square, though the shops are out of my price range! Purely window shopping for me. Don't remember seeing a Penhaligon's there though.
