PLEASE TJC presenters when selling Agate can you pronounce it correctly and stop calling it A-gate! A gate is something you open to walk up a path or to go into a field and it is not a gemstone!

The correct pronounciation is 'AGIT'. If you don't believe me then just click "submit" on this link and make sure your volume is turned up on your PC. A very kind gentleman will then prounounce it correctly for you!

Thank you.

Ha ha Gemcherub :) I posted about that on the Gems TV section the other day as it's another one that drives me mad! Try MARQUISE and you'll hear it's not a tent after all :giggle:

Actually I did generalise a bit in my post which is unfair as I'm sure the fabulous John Scott does actually say 'AGIT' but he's the only one who gets it right. Mind you, he always said Marquise correctly too. Maybe they should get John to do some training with the others and teach them how to speak properly

No Krosbint, that's when he's talking about the boss! xxxxxxxxxxx

Mmmmm not sure the pronounciation of Agate is right? Surely it's Ag-ate?

A git is normally a very annoying person!

I thought more of a gut than a git,
and most definitely not an ayegate
A git is a twit
and a gut is a phut
Annoying? Just more than a bit.

Argey ... that's brilliant!

I thought it was "A-gut" ... almost "A-gert" with a very soft R ... blimey, this is hard to write! Kind of more like the "u" in "Circus" ... does that make sense?

I can assure you it is pronounced 'AGIT' but if you don't believe me or the link in my first post then here's another for you
http://www.oxfordadvancedlearnersdictionary.com/dictionary/agate
The first box is the English pronunciation (the other is American) This is the Oxford Dictionary pronunciation however if you prefer Cambridge then here it is from the Cambridge Dictionary
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/topics/precious-and-semi-precious-stones/definition-of-agate

I have known how to pronounce Agate correctly since I was about 5 years old because we used to go looking for it. Yes, there is a lot of Agate found in Scotland!

Of course it's a well known fact that the best English in Britain is spoken in Inverness so we Scots are at a distinct advantage when it comes to speaking properly :giggle:

Still reads as a get not a git - lol, and sounds like a gut/gert. Perhaps it's an accent thing? Don't come the old Scot's git with me either, my mum was a McMinn/Anderson, and I studied a certain amount of Geology when I did me Environmental Science degree - so there! <a href="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.smileycentral.com%252F%253Fpartner%253DZSzeb008%255FZNxpt484YYGB%2526i%253D26%252F26%255F32%255F5%2526feat%253Dprof/page.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/26/26_32_5.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0"><img border="0" src="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fimgfarm%252Ecom%252Fimages%252Fnocache%252Ftr%252Ffw%252Fsmiley%252Fsocial%252Egif%253Fi%253D26%252F26_32_5%2526uiv%253D3.0/image.gif"></a> xxxxxxx x

Profligate ...say that, then cross out the p, r, o, f & l ... substitute the "i" for an "a" (as in "And") and that's how you say it!

In my head I hear it pronounced as sort of half way between a-gate and a-git with the first vowel being longer,
so my vote goes to......ah-gaite.......................sort of......:cheeky:

Should we have a referendum?

Is that ah, as in ah Bisto, and gaite, as in garden gate? If so - git outta here!
