Maybe you could give your MIL one of those timer switchers you could plug the burner into and if you set it up for her so it's on for x many hours a day and then switches off, that might solve the problem of her forgetting to switch it off. Not as good as having the burner turn itself off I know but it would allow the gift to be enjoyed in safety.

my letter came today and it doesn't really solve the issue, only acknowledges the 'on air' mistake, and advised 'the only way to switch off safely is to do so at the plug'

The line about 'never leaving your candles unattended' isn't relevant in the case of this Electric Tart Burner! It isn't a candle it has no wick, though I think Burner is perhaps the wrong word and maybe Warmer or something similar is perhaps more appropriate.

I know I'm nitpicking the letter, but I'm in that kind of mood, :mysmilie_17:,
