Gems are announcing the inclusion of "created Moissanite" to their repertoire. Whilst I've always found their stock phrase "not created" to be a ludicrous statement at least we did know what they meant even if, technically, such a statement cannot be scientifically true.

Just about every one of their presenters is going to have to lose this phrase after years of having it pumped into their ears, night after night. If they use it to describe any of their gemstones, it will look as though they are having a dig at "created Moissanite". Posh CZ, fake Faberge eggs in the Victoria style of silver, marcasite and pearls. Looks as though they've realised that they went too far downmarket, and are trying to achieve middle ground.

Should be fun!

The word desperation springs to mind and I think they'll try just about anything if the last few months are anything to go by - I very much doubt whether such fine judgement was involved Argey, but sweet of you to give them the benefit of the doubt!

I saw a trailer that flashed a ring yesterday and it just said "coming soon" i thought it was way to big for a real diamond, but then thought to myself "no they wouldn't!"
Well its just bad to worse in my opinion!

Can someone please explain to this ignorant person (me) what Mossanite is?
Is it just another version of CZ?:20:

As a Moissanite owner........

I'm happy to oblige star234.

Here's a link to Charles and Colvard website which explains, much better than I could, the story of Moissanite.

http://www.charlesandcolvard.com/heritage.cfm

We've started on the 'Heritage' page but there is much more info if you click on the links on LHS.

I'm looking forward to Thursday's premiere and seeing what designs (and prices) are on offer. ;)

So have they taken it over from IW which usually sold it.

Mossiante is like an arm and leg plus your mortage to buy. So don't expect cheap deals I will say in the £££ at least.

Oh dear, it's a shame, I always liked the fact that with Gems you knew that you were always getting proper gems.

BRING BACK STEVE ASHTON, AT LEAST HE MADE US LAUGH!!!!!!!!

What I don't get is - with a whole world of beautiful, natural gemstones out there, why even bother with the man-made stuff?

Sheer arrogance of the human race I'm afraid Miss M, always thinking we can do better than nature itself. xxx

I've always been astonished at the price of Moissonite, and even more surprised that people bought it. I know it has it fans, but TBH, if I want a diamond lookalike, (and there is a place for it) there are reasonably priced items available that do the job.

Why does the phrase desperate times calling for desperate measures come to mind?

:doggie:

Just now I saw Matt selling a ring from the new summer range: silver with painted enamel with 'top-notch' crystals - indeed Lady Mad, the measures are truly desperate.

Well I expected this news to become a thread sooner or later. Like everyone else I am surprised Gems are now selling Moissanite. However, unlike everyone else who has posted so far, I own Moissanite and I would say to you all - Don't knock it until you've tried it! Yes it's man made and yes it's not cheap but I can assure you it is nothing like any "created diamond" you have ever seen!! I bought mine from a fabulous Jewellers in New York who gave me the best customer experience I have ever had in my life - fantastic! The price was much better than here in the UK even with the customs charges which basically amounted to the VAT.

The solitaire I have is worth every penny I paid for it unlike a lot of pieces I've bought from some of the TV Gems channels! I defy anyone without extensive knowledge and experience to look at my ring and tell me it's not a diamond! It has fooled many a jeweller in the past as it registers as being a genuine diamond when tested meaning they had to develop a Moissanite tester so they could differentiate! Mine is a 1 carat though so realistically it could be a diamond whereas some of the larger pieces would put doubt in your mind simply because of the value of a genuine diamond of the larger size. Mine is a replica of a genuine diamond ring I have which I purchased with money left to me for that purpose. I wear it daily and have no worries about it because I know it cost only a tiny percent of my genuine one. If anything happened to my genuine ring I would be totally devastated because of the sentimental value it has. Everyone asks me about it and not one person has ever suggested it is not genuine - they all drool over it! The only time it doesn't look as good as a diamond is outside whereas under a lot of different types of lighting it looks like the best diamond money could buy!

What's the difference between buying Moissanite and some of the heavily treated gemstones on sale from Gems TV and Rocks and Co? Neither are "natural" are they? How many people have coloured diamonds which are treated? Yes I know they are still genuine diamonds but "fake" when you compare them to natural coloured diamonds!

As I say, don't knock it until you've tried it! It's not QVC Diamonique rubbish or CZ I can assure you. It is nothing like any other created diamond or fake diamond if you prefer and that is why it is considerably more expensive. I wouldn't touch any of the other fakes with a bargepole!

I don't own any fake gems, but if I did moissanite would be the one. It's so sparkly and that's the main reason I love my diamonds. Not for what they cost or what they're worth or any inheritance value, but purely because I love that sparkle!

I'm not knocking crystals or Moissanite per se, I think they have their place and I can understand that people would want to buy them. What saddens me is that a jewellery channel who used to boast that it never sold fakes, only genuine gemstones, has changed so much. Mind you, their diamonds have never really been top notch quality and I would rather have no diamonds at all than horrible little grey stones.

I understand and agree with what you say about Gems now selling a created stone when they've always made a point of stating they only sell genuine gemstones and have been knocking created stones at every opportunity in the past. I can only reiterate though that Moissanite is very different from any other created stone and it looks far superior to the typical Gems TV accent diamonds and indeed any other diamond they sell! Everyone to their own but you honestly have to see Moissanite to believe it!

What is Moissanite?

I've seen it and I believe it! mysmilie_1436

Natural Moissanite is very rare and was first found as tiny crystals in a crater in Arizona. It is now re-created by just
one company in the world, Charles and Colvard. I could put more details as to its structure / hardness / refractive index etc,
but the youtube link below gives all this info.......as well as many examples of it being set into beautiful jewellery.
