true meaning of easter ?

hi all, be nice cos im new to this !

now i know this may sound old fashioned ! but am i the only person who finds the idea of easter gifts instead of EASTER EGGS slightly offensive ??

The giving of EGGS is to celebrate the (yes i know its a tenuous link , rolling stone from tomb / rolling hard boiled painted eggs/ chocolate egg) Christian meaning of Easter - and not the commercial any excuse to sell us yet more tat "holiday " .

i think qvc would not be so quick to cheapen or insult another religion ? i think selling coat hangers as a easter gift is outrageous .

(christmas is too far gone to compare with this)

Sadly most kids don't know the true meaning of Easter either because schools are severely restricted in teaching the Christian faith for fear of upsetting other religions in our multi cultural society. It's also disgusting the way people are castigated in the workplace for the same reason when wearing the cross as a symbol of their faith. I am appalled at what is happening to this country and it will only get worse.

P.S. If my partner gave me a set of coat hangers for any kind of present I'd tell him where to shove them.

I am not a Christian and I will give presents at Easter time anyway I want. No bible basher will impose their fairy god will on me! :devil:
 
Actually, Easter originally had nothing to do with Christianity. It's a pagan ritual to celebrate the fertility of the Goddess Eoster for the coming harvest for the year ahead. Whatever though, give me chocolate anytime!
 
Moth is totally correct. Her symbol was the egg for rebirth.
The Easter Bunny is also pagan and well before christianty too. Rabbits are so fertile again the coming of spring and new birth and crops growing.

Give me a good old pagan party anyday. Oh hold on that is most of the christian holidays. So the true meaning easter,christmas is to party and have fun.

Whether of the Christian faith or not I think Easter is a great time, weather can be warm and a couple of extra days holiday and of course Ben Hur on the tv.

I love to give Easter eggs/chocolates (whatever shape), it's just nice to give people you like something, never expensive gifts imo that just has nothing to do with Easter whatsoever.

My children love getting their Easter eggs on Easter Sunday, normally my husband and I don't bother to get one but I am going to enjoy one this year as for the first time ever I have given up chocolate for lent.

I've already bought myself a delicious Hotel Chocolat Extra Thick Chocolate Easter egg, its in the cupboard calling me but I'm not giving in till Easter Sunday.
 
I agree with MrBrightside. Easter will be like Christmas soon, totally out of control and nothing about it will be traditional. It's just yet another excuse for the manufacturers of cards and gifts to make more money.

Mothers' Day was originally a day off for girls in service to go and see their Mother. Now it's out of hand and the shops are full of tat for weeks in advance.

Valentine's Day is another one.

We don't have to buy gifts ~ just like we don't have to buy Valentine's/Mother's day/Christmas cards and gifts. They can advertise it and shove it down our throats as much as they like, but ultimately we are in control and we don't have to play the game if we don't want to. :sun:

I agree we don't HAVE to conform but are we not considered 'stingey' if we don't?
 
I don't mind the advertising of chocolate eggs, bunnies, etc. for Easter but giving gifts at Easter?? No thanks. Using it as an excuse to market most items is offensive and I wonder if QVC and other companies taking this approach would insult other religions in such a way ... I seriously doubt it. As for what one faith such as Christianity has taken on from pagan practices to adapt is a valid point to perhaps raise, but these practices have been accepted as a part of the faith and often taken on a serious meaning that should be respected imho.

It is true that we each as individuals can choose to not participate in the commercialisation of something that is held dear or at least try to avoid it. I have from time to time sent Easter cards to friends and family or given flowers, but to buy a gift is for me insulting. But for someone else it might be alright.
 
Most annoying ever - galaxy chocolate ad wishing us a happy February 29th. A mathematical correction is now an occasion?
I was brought up and am secular but I would never insult a person's faith and I do think the commercialism is degrading. I like making Easter cards with the springtime theme though.

Sorry but I wasn't taught 'pagan' at school so Easter for me will always be about the crucifiction and then the resurrection of Christ, and I'm no Bible basher.

Forget all the posh eggs, I have 4 bags of Lindt assorted mini eggs :happy: which are on special offer) at Sainsburys. :flower::flower::flower:
