Octillion cut diamonds

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if any of you had bought an octillion cut diamond from TJC and what they were like IRL?

I understand that Zales in the US cut them which is interesting - i kind of had it in my head that Zales was the equivalent of H Samuel over the pond but might have that completely wrong. Been in once or twice and the sizeable diamonds just seem to look ok although some of their pendants are nice.

They are waxing lyrical about the octillion cut today and they do look nice but are they really any better than the regular brilliant cut?

Will i see a difference in terms of sparkle and light???

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

I saw that TJC were promoting these unusual cut diamonds this weekend, but have missed them so far. Specific hours have been mentioned, was that only on the hour or during the hours, do you know?

The only info I can find is this little link referring to Zales as you have already mentioned, and the fact that they have 82 facets.

Its some time since I saw any on TJC, but recall thinking that they were rather nice.......if only funds would allow! :54:

These are patented cuts which is why you don't see them in many places.

Unless the diamond is properly protected once set, the points of the octillions can be knocked easily and chip/crack.

There was a study a while ago comparing Octillions (which are marketed as having more facets so more sparkle) and the results were that they didn't perform any better than any other diamonds.

Bottom line? Marketing ploy and not one that's really caught on. However, if you want a different cut then worth getting but don't pay through the nose.

The one plus is that the octillion range is typically in platinum whereas most iliana quality is white gold and i just seem to bash white gold pieces to bits!

The stones did look lovely and sparkly and i was tempted, but I decided to give them a pass and hold off until i find an ideal cut GIA certified stone instead which i am sure will sparkle just as much (i have always wanted and ideal cut stone a i have heard that these are the most beautiful even if the colour and clarity is good but perhaps not perfect).

You're obviously a lady who knows her diamonds! Trust me on this ...... you pay more for an ideal cut BUT the performance will knock the socks of most other diamonds. Once you've seen an ideal cut it's difficult to go back! Just for info, you can even go down as far as an SI1/2 and a G/H happily (I'm using proper GIA grades here not a jeweller's own lol) with an ideal cut because the performance will make up for it. If you're not particularly colour sensitive and don't mind diamonds with a bit of warmth, you might even get an I/J colour that you'll love.

There are a couple of American diamond dealers who specialise in Ideal cuts and if you want their names, drop me a PM and I'll let you have them. Just beware of the import taxes if you go down that route!

Thanks Meeshoo. I dont really know my diamonds all that well but am learning. The reason i got the 'ideal cut' bug was that a jeweller showed me the difference of an ideal cut G VS2 stone and a poorly cut E VVS2 stone and gosh what a difference! The G stone looked amazing whereas the E colour one was just so so. Totally convinced me that cut is the most important factor when buying diamonds.

Anyone see the 2ct octillian solitaire on this morning?? Obviously an impressive stone in size and it had a good sparkle under the studio lights but I have to say the irregular style of the cut did make it look slightly odd, to me anyway. :11: And for £10,999 I'm sure I'd want it set into a ring that wasn't hollowed out at the back. :YIKES: It didn't sell btw. PC:

It went really fast at 11am for 14,999!!! The presenter barely had a chance to show it. Blink and you would have missed it.
THanks everyone for the info on the cut vs ideal cut. My man and I are trying to learn so that the big purchase we make soon will be a good one!!!

Still not sold! they are showing it again saying how the order didn't go through yesterday!
Not one presenter has said (while i've been watching any way) its a 1.96ct stone not a 2.00ct i only noticed when i looked at the details on the web, there is another .04ct diamond which i presume is on the inside of the band!

r u sure?? I just was in from walking m'dawgies saw it and.. thought it sold?? did it????

Cooo.. silly money BUT on saying that my local Jeweller had a 1ct platinum baguette cut solitaire in the window for £11,0000 .. it was beautiful! I spoke to him and the lowest he would let it go for was £9000 :2:
so there ya go ... yikes.. (must check my lotto ticket) lol
