I don't know if I've uploaded the photo correctly, but hope so - this is what my OH found when digging out this morning..for years I've wanted a conservatory but "too much digging" - as you can see from the depth of the soil here! Anyway, he called the police, who came to inspect - they sent for the bomb disposal squad to come and check it out - they've now been and gone and assure us it's NOT a bomb! However, it's too big for them to remove so there it has to stay! I was over at my Dad's and OH rang me there..I couldn't get home fast enough, I was all of a-flutter - definitely the kind of excitement one can do without!

Bomb squaddie was gently digging around and trying to get his arm up the length of the object but he couldn't so he said for all he knew it could be 10 feet, 20 feet - it was solid and immovable anyway, which is why it's still in situ - I would have been far happier had it been able to be removed and carted away obviously!! This used to be farmland in days gone by so it could be piping, even some kind of trough, or water tank, he didn't know, we don't know, all we have are his assurances that it wasn't dangerous..!

oohh, that's strange. Did they try passing one of those extension camera thingies, like drain cleaners use, to get a better idea of the length of it?

Oooh, exciting! It looks like the base of some kind of water container to me, but heck, I'm no expert.

Our next door neighbours started digging for a pond a couple of years ago, and came across a complete and very solid underground shelter from WWII, with all sorts of weird and wonderful things - well, mostly rusty things, actually - that suddenly came to light. [Imagine an entire two room cellar, but concreted over, and buried under your back garden!]

I love these unusual finds, but I'm so glad you're not about to blow up the street, BM ... :wave:

well, they did say if it WAS a bomb they would have to evacuate 400 yards around..we'd have been popular with the neighbours wouldn't we - can see us all trailing up to the nearest Travel Lodge! I wondered how they felt if they saw this huge van with "Bomb Disposal Unit" writ large!!

I don't think he had any kind of camera doodah dolly, I think the earth was too solid around it anyway, he was trowelling it away to get his forearm up to find the top of it but he couldn't. Nice bum mind!

I've only just caught up on this.
What a fright!
While planting some trees a few years back I came upon a circular a layer of bricks. My neighbour informed me I'd found the old farm well. I just stuck a tree on top of it.
