Talking of honours, my brother is a senior officer in the London Fire Brigade and if I knew how to nominate him I would. I am always stunned, sickened and proud (what a combo) to hear about his "experiences". Unbelievable, second only to an army on the battlefield, in my very biased opinion.

I'm showing off now but don't stop me ! He has been granted the freedom of the city for services rendered. I need a new outfit for his ceremony ! Our late Dad was a refugee and asylum seeker after WW2 and would be sooo proud of him.






Linda I am so moved reading this ...in one of my threads I mentioned that I'm not a great fan of candles because of my fear of forgetting them ...this is because my son lost a friend at the age of Ten to a house fire ( it was cigarette ) ...exactly 14 years on 9th Jan ....he died with his grandmother ....the family had flu so he stayed with her for the night ....his baby brother and older brother with mum and dad ....beyond a nightmare ...poisonous fumes from a,very old settee killed them .....his poor Mum has never gotten over it and all the services involved .and us ......they do a beyond tremendous job ...and the awful scenes they have to deal with .....I feel proud for you for your brother x

I can identify with your pride and your brother truly deserves his recognition. My brother has just retired from the Fire Service after many years and I too have always been amazed at the sterling job they do. My oldest son has done 23 years in the Army and has been to every war zone ( often more than once ) in those 23 years and will probably face more before he retires. My middle son is a Police Officer and has received several commendations for bravery and his partner is a Doctor of Microbiology who has just volunteered to go to Sierra Leone to help with the ebola crisis. I never begrudge film stars, business people, pop stars etc their successes but it pains me to see so many gongs awarded to them when the World is full of unsung heroes who IMO deserve them far more.

Its incredible reading some of these stories about actual "Heroes" that save lives etc, and for them to be mentioned in the same sentence as someone whos done a bit of acting or has designed jewellery or a bag is a joke, Just my opinion but it puts things into perspective.

It's lovely to read about your families Ericsmum and Vienna. You should be proud and want to 'show off' about them - rightly so!! This is what is should all be about.

I'm also 100% behind the extraordinary normal folk who receive recognition in the honours list but I imagine Nicki of Lola Rose and Leighton Denny get theirs for building a British company that exports world-wide and creates UK jobs, rather than for their colourful beads/nail polish. Sadly the media are always more interested in a "celeb" story than a quietly-getting-on-with-it local hero.

I have to say, I felt a pang of guilt when I heard this, having stated she didn't deserve it....but then I thought that as soon as I had proof of her charitable work then I'd reserve my guilt until then, ha ha! I am not saying she doesn't do any, but looking at James Corden, hasn't he just organised some footie match?! I still reserve judgement. However, I would like to make it clear that I absolutely love our Joanie! I have a few of her beauty books and cosmetics. She is an icon. Maybe she should have been awarded one for services to glamour?!!!

The national press/television news tend to report on well known people, or at least they are the ones who grab the headlines, but local press tend to report on "normal" people.

Thank you Minxykitten Kitten ....It was a smoke alarm without a battery ....we have practically one in every room ....and needless to say we will never forget the funeral....I'm welling up just typing this ....please please make sure of any smoke alarms that work ..l..the only thing I could comfort my sons with is that he was not burned ....he passed in his sleep .................

I find it rather nauseating that she has become a Dame of the realm, and its come to light that she is appearing in some 5th rate programme in the U.S about an English royal family, more or less reprising her Alexis role. She couldn't act her way out of a bag of toffees. I'd love to know what the likes of Judi Dench and Maggie Smith must think.

Come on now. You cannot compare Joan Collins with Victoria Beckham. I like Joan Collins, good or bad actress I've liked her in all her roles and I like the way she gets all tarted up at her age because she clearly doesn't want to be old. I also like the way she can take the pee out of herself in those snickers ads. Good on ya lady.

I neither like nor dislike her as an actress/TV personality but if she was an 81 year old neighbour/friend/relative of ours, we`d be saying how great it is that she wears makeup, dresses well and looks fab for her age.
She might wear wigs and she might have spent a fortune on her teeth or any other bits, but by heck, she won`t sit back and grow old quietly and for that, I take my hat off to her.

Well, if a woman known for her husbands, bad acting and performed in porn films can gain a Damehood, why cant an ex mediocre footyplayer who poses in his knickers get a knighthood ? or for that matter, his wife an ex singer (?) and who, without any training whatsoever can front a fashion empire, get a damehood.

I was reading a magazine interview with Joan in the hairdressers today in which she said she was delighted to be made a Dame in recognition of her charity work. Didn't really say which charities she has been involved with and I must admit that I'm not aware of any particular causes that she is affiliated to but good on her anyway if that's the case. Agree she's not much of an actress but she has kept herself feminine and glamorous all her life which must take some doing!
