We've come along way since the days where you either had an upright Hoover with a zip up cloth bag that contained the dustbag, it had a light at the front and made the most horrendous noise, and you could hear it changing gear depending what surface you were cleaning..horrible sound - Or you had an Electrolux cylinder one..can't comment on those 'cause we had the Hoover. These days there's an eyewatering selection to choose from with eyewatering prices to match!

We had the Electrolux cylinder vac. You could switch from suck to blow, and it came with an attachment you could use for spray painting! We all loved it. As little kiddies, by brother or I would climb aboard and mum or dad would tow us around using the hose to pull it.
My gran had the upright Hoover, and you are so right about the hideous noise.
I actually got to clean with one of the very earliest models of it when I worked for my local council as a home help (summer holiday relief), so I know how robust they are, despite the racket they make.
I now have a plug-in upright Dyson and 2 Dyson cordless jobbies. Still miss that Electrolux, though.

I forgot to mention that the Lidl model is the upright, not the handheld.

I got one upright one from Ideal World for £149, which is the one that’s upstairs, and another upright one from GTech direct which was £129. The same deal included a handheld one which was also cheaper than the normal price and so I bought that at the same time. I do have an Oreck upright, which I rarely use now although it’s so powerful that it almost lifts the fitted carpets up. I use the GTech Air Rams (both the Mk ll models) every day and they also leave tramlines on the carpets and so are pretty powerful for a cordless machine. I got my first AirRam (the Mk l) from QVC when they first came out, but that one eventually died - hence my buying the newer model.

My friend was so impressed when she saw what mine did that she ordered two, one for her mum and one for herself but sadly the deal had finished so she paid the full price.

I bought the original Mk 1 from Q. it later began screaming so I bought a replacement, which was then a Mk 2.

But I have to say that the Mk 1 works much better than the Mk 2, especially the brush edge cleaning.

The screaming noise was caused by a gearbox with plastic gears which wore out. When I told GTECH, they sent me all new "innards" with metal gears, so I now have one up and one down.

Can't remember what I paid, but I also have 2 handhelds, they are excellent. I think one was from Q and the other was a deal from GTECH. Their service is excellent.

My OH also has the upright and handheld, the latter being a gift from me, as she admired mine. Will I now be castigated for buying her a vacuum cleaner?
