Just spotted on one of the news threads on another site. End of an era, he always seemed a gentle sort, not that I knew him!

Aw, I know.
I heard it on the radio last night & my first thoughts was of our Mama. She loved 'Dad's Army' and so do I.
She said the Home Guard was as chaotic as the series showed it to be. My grandfather (her father) was a fire watchman and had many a tale to tell. I was always amazed at how they could find humour in such a dark time, but they did. I suppose it was a coping mechanism.
