Last year I bought a set of 3 Orly crystal/glass ? Nail files in a nice zip bag big enough for me to keep other nail products in.

So disappointed with the files, they leave rough edges or cause the free edge to flake into layers. A few mins after filing, I find my nails catching on clothing.

SO, my question is can anyone recommend a really good crystal/glass file please that really gives the best results.

Thanks

I bought that set of three Orly files in the zip up bag. I use them to get the length off and I like them for that function, but agree that they can leave a rough edge sometimes if my nails are a bit dry. Consequently I follow up with a Spa-Rific file and that sorts out any rough edges and seals the tips.

To deal with any dryness I use Margaret Dabbs nail and cuticle serum and that really sorts out any dryness. When I’ve used that the Orly files don’t cause a problem.

Leighton Denny.
I also have a mini Perfect formula crystal one which is great for travelling.

I can thoroughly recommend Leighton Denny’s Crystal files. I bought one when they were first on QVC goodness knows how many years ago. I just run it under the warm tap occasionally and it’s as good as new. Also have a small one in a case that I keep in my handbag.

I totally recommend Leighton Denny - I have had his large crystal file for at least 10 years. Still going but I'm thinking of replacing in the near future as it's not quite as smooth lately. It's the only crystal file I have had and will definitely buy again.
These are the ones with the 25yr guarantee on them, as long as they’ve not been used on anything other than natural nails?
So should be able to get replaced if necessary?
I managed to break mine in half, I left it on the sofa and sat on it. Still usable though.

I also recommend Leighton Denny's crystal file. It's perfect imo.

I have horrible nails. They started forming vertical ridges about 20 years ago and have been a nightmare ever since.

The thicker ridges are so hard yet the tissue paper thin parts tear downwards along the thicker ridge. They catch and tear on anything and everything. This makes them tear further - ouch!

Files. What can I say about them? Well. I've tried Orly. LD, MD, PF and SR. The only ones I didn't like were the Orly ones. I can use all the others to get the length down (I'm left-handed so have no nails on that hand but long, hard to handle nails on the right).

However, the one that leaves the finest edge for me is the Spa-Rific. It's a weird thing to handle - I found it quite unpleasant to use at first - but it does the best job for me as I can 'dump' the edge down (I use the word 'dump' as it's the same technique my smith used to do to my pony's hoof. Anyone with horse experience remember this done by the farrier?). I wish my nails were as tough as hooves!

Gels were GREAT for my nails. Fab! No ridges, no tearing and splitting. Then I developed a splinter of blood running up the nail that literally erupted under the free edge in a mini volcano of blood and pus that wouldn't stop! It started as I was doing the washing up on a Saturday evening and did not stop until I saw the surgery's nurse who applied silver nitrate.

I was sent to the dermatologist who dug it out (twice, after the first time failed and it kept bleeding) and sent me away with a warning not to use UV gels.

I've tried hardeners, normal polishes and even going to bed with plasters over my nails. Nothing worked like gels. I'm so miffed and disappointed but the way the dermatologist said UV then casually linked gels with increased skin cancer makes me think twice every time I'm tempted.

I have a pack of three small files from M&S with a zip loc bag for £5 or £6 and they have lasted me quite a while and not broken. I have broken lots of the expensive Leighton Denny files and not buying anymore

Bought the LD years ago but wasn’t fussed so gave them, 2 in a pouch, to my mum. My favourite has been Perfect Formula. It’s a mini included in their polish set years ago. Recently purchased the Margaret Dabbs full size and love it and absolutely adore the buffer too, makes nails so shiny and really lasts which I like as I’ve ditched polish. Love the buffer so much bought more off Amazon.

That’s the one I got.
Small and mighty. 😎
